Harles Apodaca, age 46, of Denver, was arrested this morning after he attempted to elude police in Jefferson County. Mr. Apodaca was initially contacted as a passenger of a silver Ford Escape that had been contacted earlier in the morning, 6:09 a.m., on Highway 119 milepost 4.5. The vehicle had been stopped for fictitious plates. The driver at that time, Sonia Zamudio, age 39, from Commerce City, was arrested for driving while her license was under restraint, displaying fictitious plates, and having no proof of insurance.
The passenger in the vehicle was identified as Harles Apodaca, and as a habitual traffic offender (HTO). The Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office was contacted to give Mr. Apodaca a courtesy ride to Black Hawk, where he could wait to picked up by a friend or family member. After the Trooper left the scene, at 6:53 a.m., of the initial stop to take Sonia Zamudio to the Gilpin County Jail, Mr. Apodaca became the driver of the Ford Escape and left the scene. All police units in the area where advised of this incident and attempted to locate the vehicle that was now being driven by a known Habitual Traffic Offender (HTO).
The vehicle was located at 7:25 a.m., near U.S Highway 6 milepost 275. Troopers attempted to contact the vehicle when the vehicle fled. The driver attempted to elude troopers northbound on Simms Blvd. The vehicle crashed into a tree at the intersection of 20th Ave and Simms Blvd. Mr. Apodaca then fled the scene of the crash on foot. Colorado State Patrol Troopers and Lakewood Police Officers set up a perimeter of the area and began a search for the suspect. The suspect was located at 7:42 a.m., near 2001 Routte St. where he was taken into custody.
Harles Apodaca will be booked into the Jefferson County Jail on charges that include Vehicular Eluding, a class 5 felony, Aggravated HTO, a class 6 felony, and Resisting Arrest, a class 2 misdemeanor.
