A Colorado State Trooper was injured in a crash on I-25 at mile post 187 late Tuesday night (01-18-05 @ 23:59 hours). It all started when a District 1-C Trooper attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling 100 mph in a 75 mph zone. The Trooper observed the occupants throwing two bags out of their vehicle that appeared to contain a “white powder” when they hit the ground. The vehicle was southbound I-25 and exited onto Lincoln at which time the Trooper lost sight of it. The Trooper had just called off the chase when a second Trooper coming into the area encountered a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-25. From what it sounded like, the Trooper swerved to avoid hitting this car head on, lost control and crashed. The Trooper radioed he had been in an accident and that he was not sure if he was 10-4 or not. He then stated that he was OK, “just a little dizzy” but a minute or two later he requested an ETA on medial and said “Having a hard time breathing, get’em here!”
I have a recording of the event from just moments before the report of the crash to when he made his statement of having a hard time breathing. Keep in mind that the recording was made using voice activation to eliminate long delays between transmissions, so you need to listen for the dispatcher’s times closely.
