CSP Unit 8A1

Hi all,

Today here in Grand Junction, I heard CSP unit 8A1 tell Montrose on CSP-3 (154.905) that he was aboard Airborne 4, enroute to Centennial Airport. I did confirm that "Twin Cessna 4SP" was on the VHF Air Band talking to Denver Center.

My question, is 8A1 an aviation unit officer or pilot, or is that the call for some other type special unit officer?

Given the situation, 8A may have been an Attorney General, normal callsign "AG", or some other big Kahuna. Lets see what Jim thinks. This is like a weekend night for me, so I have had one or two alcoholic beverages...............................lol........

Hi Chris,

From what I read on a web page about the Colorado State Patrol a unit number starting with an "8" indicates a Hazardous Materials Specialist. I have posted a link to that page below.

Thanks Todd. I have seen that link in the past, and it is dated from 1997, so I wondered if anyone had current info on the 8A series.

Also, a correction, the unit I heard was 8A2 rather than 8A1. I noticed this while rechecking my notes.

Think it's just a regular ol CSP Trooper but he's assigned to the aviation division. Just heard 8A2 at Centennial Airport talking to Douglas County troopers this morning about conducting a "team up" which is airborn traffic enforcement and it was decided 8A2 would not fly today due to weather but would pick up a car in Castle Rock and assist them with running calls today.

Thanks Jim, I had a feeling that might be the case, due to the context of his in service call aboard Airborne 3, I thought I was a pretty good chance he was an air wing guy, expecially since it appeared to be 8A2 actually doing the talking. I thought Id look for a second opinion though, since the info on the web is a bit dated.

BTW - Does anyone out there have a more up to date list of the CSP radio unit numbers of special units?

8A=Aircraft
8B=Operational Development section
8C=Hazmat
8D=Motor Carrier Safety
