Research this in the Wiki - For the Uniden and RS line, at least, each scanner has its own article, and most times, the capabilities of each are listed, including if a scanner can handle CTCSS - also more commonly referred to as PL (Private Line - a Moto term) and DCS. If it's not mentioned, check out the 'reviews' links, as sometimes it's mentioned there.

I have a BC 898T and it has CTCSS or PL and DPL capabilities. Its okay for conventional freqs, but I was warned that you need alpha numeric tags to ID trunk system users. They, of course, were correct.
