Curious Frequency

Hi- I'm looking for information on a frequency that turned up during random searching this last month: 164.435 mHz. At the time, it must have sounded interesting, though short, because I made no notes on it. I live in SW Minnesota and could find nothing in my published references on it, but they're older. A search of the FCC site came up dry. A transmission I caught today referred to flight plans, Phillip, Oahe, 'TEP'?. No idea how it bounced way over here. Anyone heard this? Thanks. Dan

The exact frequency would be 164.4375; does that one show up in the search?

Or 164.4325 or as he said 164.4350. They are all possiblities. 164.4350 actually used to be used as a transponder freq on bird collars, but I think that has been changed.

This older Uniden scanner shows the frequency as 164.435. It only shows 12.5 kHz steps in UHF, so I'm not sure about the exact freq. Could this be a birdie, and if so, how can you calculate where the true frequency might be?

For some reason, this one really got my attention because the things mentioned in the short transmissions are like nothing I've heard before. For example, "rapid-line crew". The quality of sound of the transmissions is very high, which makes me think it's federal, maybe military. Almost certainly aero of some kind. I also get the sense it's a helicopter involved. It's a cool mystery.

BTW,I'm in Tyler, Mn which looks to be about 100 miles SSE of Sisseton. Dan

Well, since it sounds like some sort of air-op, I will continue to scan it. It may be close enough to hear, of course it could be SE of you which will be sort of a problem for me to hear. 8)

In southern Calif. 165.4375R 100.0 Hz is used by U.S. Customs.

The scanner is a ~10yr old Uniden BC178XLT. The manual doesn't state the IF, but I assume it's 10.7mHz. You're probably right about the possibility of an image. I've noticed very faint airline transmissions occasionally showing up on 2m ham repeater channels I've programmed in. But 165.435 comes in loud and clear. Do you subtract multiples of 10.7 from the image freq. to find the true freq. ?

Very possible. Since this scanner seems to be playing tricks, I'll search air frequencies for a while and try to sort this out. I'll pay attention to news of fire westriver. Thanks to all for the help.
