If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi i got this set from my sister, she had them for a long time, she was going to throw them away but i asked if i could take them and she let me have them.

I tried searching for a users manual for them but cant find one.

My question is what channels are GMRS and What channels are FRS?

I know i will need a license to transmit on GMRS but im not 100% sure about FRS.

I am a Ham Radio Operator so that means i don't want to risk my Ham License,by transmitting on GMRS channels by mistake.

Thank you in advance for the help

73 :)

P.S. These are the ones i have;

Cobra Electronics - Cobra 14-Mile Two-Way Radios - Two Pack - CXT80 - Handheld 2-Way Radios - Camping World

Sounds to me that you have FRS RADIOS

Back in the days when they came out Everyone on the market selling these Radios Claimed they were 14 mile range Which they Were,nt

Try E-Bay under Consumer Electronics then FRS Radios Under the Search Option

Hope this helps a bit...Good Luck

GMRS lisensing...

You do not Need a GMRS License for these Types of Radios
Sure you do. Says so in the instructions, at least it did on my copy. Even as a Ham, just use the FRS channels at .5w, if you have reason to use the radios, like the rest of us do. No worries. Get licensed if you decide to pay the $85. Then, like the Hams do, upgrade to some better radios later. No big deal. No radio police here, just us Pirates!

If you want to stay strictly legal- use channel 1-14- they are FRS or shared FRS/GMRS frequencies.BTW..if you google cobra cx 80. you should be able to find and download the user instructions for the radio....good luck!

As a general rule of thumb, if your cobra is 14 ch (early models) then you need not worry but if your unit is 22 ch then 1-7 are gmrs splinter channels. 8-14 are FRS and 15-22 are GMRS repeater outputs and simplex.

So the the ch that you are concerned with would be 15-22.
Hopefully this helps. :)

On 22-channel radios, channels 8-14 are FRS only, and are legal to use without a license.

Channels 1-7, although shared with FRS, are typically set up to transmit at >.5W, thus operate under GMRS rules (i.e. you need a license to legally operate on them).

Channels 15-22 are strictly GMRS channels, and a license is required to legally operate on them.

Thank you for the info but was wondering if the $80 fee for a license to transmit on the GMRS Frequency's. Is it worth paying it?
