just curious how long has it been since you have heard the FBI using analog in the DC area? Asking since I have not heard any federal agency(excluding the park and capitol police) that was not P25 in well over a year.

Have you heard any of the P25 stuff that was not encrypted?

Most of these freqs are in use daily and analog, most of the time they are encrypted however. I have heard the P25 freqs in the open briefly, but they are not in use as much as the analog channels.

very interesting, thanks! I will have to pay closer attention. If you happen to keep track of which are most active, I would love to know the top five you hear most traffic on.

best advice I can give you is to plug these in your scanner and see what you hear and I always have a dedicated scanner searching the fed ranges.

Update!!!

The listed FBI freqs above are now being used in both analog and P25 modes, C 167.9 Analog and 167 NAC.

I still don't get it. Why on earth do they need that many repeaters and frequencies? It's ridiculous. They sit dormant 99% of the time across the Country. What a waste of money and spectrum resources.

I can't speak for the rest of the country but most of these repeaters are in daily use around D.C., the past few days they have been very busy, mostly P25 encrypted.

Maybe where you live, but in major cities there is use daily, on the multiple
Repeaters for the Region.

Also, these were listed for DC.

That doesn't mean they are even installed in your area. Not every 167 channel get's used in a City, some are for wider area coverage into the other States [New England as an example]

It's best to search 167-168 [original channels] and 168-173 for other activity as the analog repeaters are moved to P25 Repeaters.

It is not a waste at all if you understand the operations that go on in a large city. And they scale the number of assigned frequencies to what is needed in any given area. Rural areas are lucky to have one repeater, but those direct (mobile) channels can pop up at any time. I have even heard agents from different areas pop up on channels that were not normal for the area I heard them in. That is why we search!

I have a question for MACKBOLAN05...Do you hear analog AND digital used on the SAME frequencies? The reason I ask is because I have not heard that yet, although I do have both programmed in just in case. It slows the scan speed down by scanning twice as many channels, but I do not want to miss a thing.

This area is also going through a similar transition...I think. So far four freqs I have confirmed are P25 here. Analog is still in use. The local "E" repeaters are active as analog. One repeater in Palm Beach County was hung up (TX with no PL) for months. Just yesterday I heard a tech working on it and trying to fix it. I think he did, so they are maintaining it. I would bet the funds are not all there to do the full swing yet. We shall see over time if these are early buildout P25 freqs or if they have a special assignment. I just wonder if they will use dual mode going forward even if they get them all up to P25. Another thing I have noticed is that there is no new frequency with P25...only the same old ones so far. Other agencies, especially on UHF, seem to be going through a total re-config.

I am hearing both analog and P25 on the same frequencies, sometimes in the same day, but what is interesting is that I am getting a stronger signal when they are using digital, so I am not sure if there are separate repeaters or just a higher output on the digital side.

Very interesting. Thanks.

I'll stay tuned. ;)

There are tons of federal users in the DC/NoVa/MD area. Most likely not all FBI. Also, to be sure you are actually getting a "stronger signal" you have to evaluate the s-meter readings. A digital signal will have the same audible strength over a wide range of signal strengths.

...Which also makes it a little harder to tell if it is direct or repeated. The one B of I repeater I hear everywhere (obviously simalcast) has no repeater tail. I thought that was strange! The direct mobile traffic I did hear was choppy (digital breakup) and the S meter was jumping.

A little off topic here but, I was playing with FM Trap filters and just searching the PS freqs to get an idea of how well the filter was working when I landed on a P25 repeater (good ol' NAC 293) in the 453 MHz range. WTF? Who was that? It was my local community college! I never expected that!

I determined that the digital was stronger based on the s-meter readings, from my rooftop antenna on the same scanner, the signals are constant which leads me to believe that they are repeaters. I am guessing that these are FBI based on NAC and CSQ TONES.

I confirmed the following freqs P25 leading up to and during the inauguration:

167.2375, 167.4125, 167.4625, 167.6375, 167.7375, 172.2875

I haven't heard P25 mode anymore, it is possible that there were temporary towers or command posts setup just for this event and they have returned to using analog, DC area listeners please let me know if you are still hearing digital...

Update On P25 Use

Heard 167.2375 P25 yesterday, perhaps certain channels were changed for good, still a lot of analog on the others.
