wow, sat and ran the logger in Win500 this morning and am blown away by the data pouring out. I am tracking all sorts of ID's from Megahertz, Communications Professionals, Com/Net, Tele-Touch, Self-Denison and a few small area LTR systems. My question is this, Before I post these ID's I want to try and ID the user but Couriers just talk about the passing of time and their Dispatchers give very little info. How do you actually ID the user when all they do is talk about Crime, Traffic & Politics?

Wrecker Companies are pretty easy to ID, listen and wait for them to get a call and its self-Explanatory. here, for a good example. Mega-Hertz Dallas LTR, TG-ID: 0-02-047 the Dispatcher rattled off 20 businesses/Clients but made no mention as to why or for what. is it safe to assume this may be a Courier Co.?

Or Should I just log the ID's and go ahead and post them in the DB with no Tag as to what they are used for and by who? Just verify that they have multi-Hits and post and let someone else figure them out?

Some of these systems have NO TG-ID's listed, so What I have may still be a big improvement over the data the DB shows. But I did want to try and ID as many as possible before updating the system.

My take on this is that it is more important to identify all the correct LCN's in a system than trying to identifying individual users in a system. The range on some systems are better than others, so concentrate on the systems in your immediate area first and get those identified. For instance Gaylord Texan in Grapevine is using a low power LTR system but I seldom get up that way and have only been able to identify one channel in their system. As far as individual TGs on systems, you can listen to some of the users for days and never figure out who they are. That is if you can stand to listen to some of them for days because the comms are so intensily boring!!! Like you say, wrecker, sweeper and security companies are easy to identify by their transmissions. Identifying their company name can take a while. If you've got the time, go for it!!! There are a plethora of LTR systems in our area yet to be identified and lots of interesting talkgroups to identify if you have the time. Go for it and post away!

For the Most part, the LTR systems I am hearing the LCN's are in order. I do have auto-placement on on 2 systems, but neither have been hitting much. The other systems, Megahertz-Dallas & Self-Denison are just pouring out TG-ID's. but to sit and listen to these requires more effort than I am willing to offer. I got lucky on Communications Professional LTR system, I ID's First Watch Security thanks to the Radio shop conducting radio checks on their Assignments.

Thanks for the reply.

Max,
Are you using any software on your Pro-106? (If you've said before, I may have missed, or forgotten, which package). WIN500 will let you do logging & record, & add new talkgroups as they come up.

As far as trying to ID the talkgroups...

In SA we've just added a descriptor when we find a new TGID. For instance if you can tell it is a commercial trash company (dumpsters, open-tops, etc.), we just add that descriptor. This way if someone goes to add the system to their scanner they at least have an idea of what that ID would be. When someone listening to that ID is actually able to hear an address, company name or *insert identifying company info* then we would go back and add a name, but at minimum at least the description helps.

In SA I've mostly found these businesses: couriers, commercial trash, porta-potties, repo, construction (landscaping, irrigation, and commercial), concrete trucks and 18-wheeler transport companies- also we have 2 ambulance services.

Yes, Running WIN500, VERY nice Program by Far, Don's best piece of work! The logger is VERY NICE too. I have it saving the dump file to the HD for future reference.

Texasemt, OK so when I catch just enough traffic to make a basic educated guess then log the tag with it. that's enough for the database? I can do that. This system in Denison, "Self Radio" is loaded down with users on both sides of the Red River. And many of them are Auto parts Delivery. Some are also Wrecker in the Texoma area also, I even think Texas Lifenet EMS is on this. (The EMS Service Contracted by Bells-Savoy)
