I don't know if anyone is a ham here that uses D-Star but we have 3 D-Star repeaters downtown and 1 in gilbert. One is almost finished being put up in Charleston and there is one being worked on in Aiken as well. Charlotte already has one up for a while now. Just seeing if anyone else has been using it or thinking about it. They have been working great so far.

Have any freq to go with that?

Are they all linked via the internet or anything or all independent of each other?

They are all linked via the gateway (which is a IP based connection).

Check out our club website page at WWW.MJARC.INFO for the repeaters and other information

I am wondering about the coverage of D-Star vs analog. I am in Orangeburg and not in Columbia very much. I can receive some of the machines some of the time. I do wonder if DStar would extend the coverage. I am wondering what other's experience has been. I will also talk with some others from around here who have played with it too. I do not want to go buy expensive equipment that is useless.

Well here in Alabama, when I first got into Ham Radio and D-STAR, I had my ICOM V-82 (7 watts) and with a 5/8 mag mount antenna and I was able to "hit" a repeater over 100 miles away!!! Not sure what it'd be like in your area but that is what I first experienced.

Now I have an ID-800 as a base and use the my UT-118 (D-STAR chip) in a 2200H as my mobile. I still have the V-82 and an additional 2200H that I use as a back-up to my base unit. Maybe one day I'll get the "chips" for them too.

D-STAR is great!

We have a VHF machine that has a huge footprint. 146.670 Machine (AD4U) in St. Matthews. I am wondering if anyone around here is able to use DStar in the Orangeburg from a mobile setup. I know that some machines just out preform others. Antenna, local noise floor, height of antenna and geographic placement ect all affect performance of the machine. I know some of these guys setting up these systems but have not been able to talk to them lately. I will have to listen and try and catch one particular fella on the Fort Jackson Machine in the early AM's.

Not so much the performance of the machine - but more accurately the performance of your receiver to receive and decode them properly. Local noise(power line noise, cable tv leakage, etc. etc.) can and will effect your receivers ability to decode DStar which you must remember is data and not analog audio. P25 suffers from the very same conditions on receive problems. There are some DStar repeaters in my area also and I have some problems here as well especially when these received signals are weak. I have an ID800H in the car and a 91AD portable and love them both - great radios. Have fun with it & enjoy & happy holidays.....

see if any of your friends have d* near you, we have the repeaters between 900 and 1200 feet up on the towers and we are getting great distances from all the repeaters hand held and mobile.
