• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I went to program a NX-5700 today, with my normal programming laptop that has always worked just fine. The radio had been programmed a couple weeks ago with the same machine, no issues. The vehicle came back from the upfitter and needed a couple changes. I hooked the radio up with the KPG-46x cable and hit read. I kept getting the "check comport and connections error", the radio display shows program but then locks up. The radio must then be power cycled to try again. The D1N is set to the correct COM port and speed set to high, and has always worked fine. I then set the speed to normal and the radio will then read and write.

Thinking maybe it is a radio or cable issue I tried 2 other radios and cables. I get the same results. I tried with a couple NX-5200's with the KPG-36x cable set to high speed programming and get the same issues. Radio displays program and then "check COM port and connection. Switch back to normal speed and the radios read and write just fine, but way slower. I have never had any issues like this with D1N or cables and radios.

D1N is 4.20 and the radios are all different in firmware levels. Laptop is running win 10 with more than enough ram and storage to get things done.

Anyone have this issue or know what is causing it? I am not having any issues with BT programming the radios that have the keys for it.

They selecting the comport in the setup menu, mine does this sometimes as I use both ports.

Uninstall the cable and re insert and install it.

I programmed the 5700 and upgraded the firmware prior to the car going to the upfitter. If it was just this radio I could understand it more, however it is effecting everything in the 5000 series.

So you tried a couple other cables you said, same result, how about trying another computer to see if it isn't something with the USB port itself or the system acting up on the one and see what happens? If they are mobiles is the power level to them constant and not dropping at all?

I spent about an hour on the phone with Kenwood Land Mobile Tech Support. The best they can come up with is with the last major Windows update wiped out the USB driver settings. I had already uninstalled and then reinstalled the drivers. However today we tried it again. Rebooted the laptop. Checked for windows updates, then rebooted. We they downloaded the drivers for the cable, UART and USB. Installed them and then rebooted the machine. Everything appears to be running correctly and works on both mobile and portable radios again.. They said they have been flooded with phone calls into the support line all day long. I imagine there will be a bulletin or something coming out if there have been that many people effected by this. Anyway thanks for the help.

4.21 is the software/firmware setups that are not backwards compatible, so if you are running 4.20, that's not the cause.
Sounds like you and Kenwood confirmed it was Windoze nonsense. Good job on that. I'll have to check my laptop when I get back in the office to see if it's going to pull the same shenanigans.
