I've got a genuine PG-5G cable (actually, I have the PG-5H kit, but according to Kenwood, both the serial cables are identical). I've got chirp running in ubuntu (no problem programming my two baofengs - although it seems like nothing can help them - but I digress), but when I plug in my Kenwood, it doesn't seem to do anything.

Ubuntu is seeing the USB-to-serial adapter just fine.
I pick "download from radio", select the only usb port shown (same as when I program the baofengs), select "kenwood", and select "D710G", and *BAM*.....

Nothing.

Just a blank screen. I've tried both the PC connections (the one on the RF unit, and the one on the remote "panel") - no difference. Nothing.

Any clues?
