I'm from Madison but now retired in Florida. I frequently listen to the RR audio feed for Dane County Sheriff and EMS. When EMS is dispatched the call is assigned a response level. I have heard Alpha through Echo. My question is this: What is the meaning of these response levels. For example is an Alpha response calling for more urgency than a Delta respsonse or is the Delta more urgent? Are there other responses other than A-E? I have only heard these 5. Thank you for your responses.

I'd let someone from the area to give you a definitive response, however here's a guess based upon our local area. We're using a commercial Emergency Medical Dispatch software system.

When someone calls 911 for a medical emergency, the call taker asks a lot of questions. These questions are scripted and based upon the answers certain additional questions may be asked as well as pre-arrival instructions.

The software will then grind the information received into a code. Part of that code has a priority level. A (Alpha) is not life threatening, where E (Echo) is a life threatening situation. For example a nonrecent animal bite will have a code of 03A01. An animal bite with serious hemorrage is 03B02 and an animal bite with an unconscious patient is 03D01.

There's also an O (Omega) level. Owing to a jurisdiction's SOPs, this may be referred to a private EMS transport concern, rather than the governmental EMS service.

I think you are on the right track. I know recently there was an EMS dispatch to a location and the dispatcher indicated the "program chose a delta response but it could be an echo level response." This was for someone with chest pains and difficulty breathing.

EMS Call Classification Coding

There are many EMD systems out there, and all get updated periodically. Most dispatch centers don't put over the air the fully qualified dispatch code, just a verbal descriptor plus the A-B-C-D-E level. Fire and police dispatches have the same (but different) types of systems, tho I've rarely heard them used over the air.

Here's the last system info I've run across, and it gives you an idea of the severity levels and areas of classification (not necessarily confirmed what's used in Dane, but similar):

Thanks. All the info you have provided really helps at least for a few more days as I see on the feed there is a note that it will end on 12/31/11. I will miss it.
