Oh. A little birdie in Raleigh told me. LOL

I would recommend going back and reading the "press release"
again very carefully. Also note the date of the press release.

Crap. I can't open that document on my BB. And I must have read through it quickly the last time I read it!

I'm having trouble pulling in traffic on the new system. Pro 106, frequencies downloaded from rr db and set up for wildcards, but if I get any traffic at all it is VERY broken up. I have a list of 9 TGs that unitrunker has picked up that I also entered but still not having any luck hearing anything.

Using the same steps I haven't had any problem with VIPER or the 800mhz setup the county has been using for the buses and other transportation. Any ideas?

Edit: seems like it has to do with their simulcast system. Guess I gotta get a directional antenna and aim at one of the towers? This is a kick in the nuts if it stays this way.

Sometimes, attenuating the system frequencies via the scanner keypad is a more-effective solution.

The one problem with a directional antenna is that your 106 is then tethered to the antenna ... that kind of negates the usefulness of having a handheld.

Scanner Info for Dare County

Just for general information, I live in Dare County and have purchased a GRE PSR-800, which is my first trunk tracking scanner.
Had it's data base updated and running Viper in about one hour after opening the box, so its pretty easy to use.
Dare County took about another hour, because there were no talk groups in the data base. I had to figure out how to put in a wildcard for the talk groups using the supplied computer software, owners manual was not much use, but software works really nice.
I have added some talk groups to the data base, but the alias for beach law was put into the data base incorrectly, I will update some more talk groups soon.
The PSR-800 seems to work really well, sound is not quite as good as old analog, but for the most part it is not bad.
The PSR-800 has some nice features such as talk group ID, Radio ID and a really nice recording system.
The light on the front can be assigned to a talk group ID or Radio ID and can be made to flash or non-flash different colors for each ID as well as beeps and other sounds can also be assigned.
The radio can be programmed with your own frequencys like the local ham repeaters 145.110, 146.940,145.290,146.835 etc.
What sold me this scanner was that it is reported to be able to receive TDMA, Dare County is currently P25 Phase 1 FDMA but P25 Phase 2 will be TDMA.
Things I don't like about the scanner are that the physical packaging is lacking somewhat, the window over the display is reported to be easy to scratch, but radio peformance is a 10 out of 10.
Hope this information is helpful.

Guess that means I should not take my 346XT next week when the family and I visit. Will not be able to hear Fire Dispatch North & South and EMS Dispatch. Maybe I will put Currituck in for the trip down and back.

I haven't read anything official regarding EMS dispatch, but fire department paging should still be in operation on VHF, as well as the fire dispatch talkgroup.

Keep in mind that there are no pagers that can function well on a trunked system ... which is why most fire agencies that are heavily staffed by volunteers still retain their conventional paging channel.

The volunteer departments are responsible for funding their own radio purchases. The minimum handheld being deployed on the Viper and Dare County systems is an XTS2500, which costs about $2900. if bought new under the state contract.

I have a couple of questions. What frequencies are the fire departments using for paging? (IIRC, Motorola Minitors don't do trunking) Also, are they still using two-tone paging? (and if so, is it the same tone frequencies?) Is Dare EMS the same way?

I really don't want to plunk down $500 for a new digital scanner (I have a Pro-94 right now). I may miss out on hearing some transmissions, but the calls are what I'm most interested in hearing. My friend on one of the local Fire departments said they will only be able to hear the page-outs on their pagers, and won't be able to hear any other traffic.

the volunteer stations still have traditional paging and transmissions from central are going out on the old FD North Dispatch as well as the new system on TG 14625 for those things.

Did anyone realize the 800 system was down for 5 minutes when the power flickered during the storm?

It was a waste of time bringing my 346XT on our trip... Only heard traffic on North Dispatch. On Saturday when the storms came thru Units were dispatched for a second alarm to Station 11. Units were told to switch to Tac 11 & Event 2. I am sure there will be some updates to the DB from all the traffic on Saturday night. Still had a great three days at the Outer Banks!

I know they are as of now, but I heard the "simulcasting" on the old analog frequency would cease April 22nd. So are you saying the fire depts will still be paged out on 155.925? If so, I have an old scanner that's not narrowband capable, will it still be able to pick it up after everything goes narrowband?

could have turned on or set up a wildcard. They were on TG 14502 for the most part for all communication Saturday night in Duck.

I think they will be paged out on that due to the ability for the volunteers for everyone but KH, KDH, and NH to report as needed. I know the guy I bought a boat from on Friday still had his old pager on (works with Southern Shores) and didn't mention a change in paging setup when I was talking to him about the new system.
