Just starting to get into this hobby and have no clue what type of scanner I need for my area. I live in Darke County and don't know if I need a digital scanner or if an analog scanner will work?

Darke County uses MARCS so you will need a P25 digital scanner. No simulcast sites for there, so you can get by with a less expensive model. Whistler WS1040 or Uniden BCD325P2 are about the least expensive new models.

You can also get by with a used Radio Shack Pro-106 (earlier version of the WS1040). There are several of those on eBay right now for under $300.

I'd get one with phase 2 p25 capability, then u will be future proof when they switch to phase 2 system from phase 1 in the future... there's nothing saying that they will upgrade to phase 2 but eventually it's highly likely they will

If you want to Listen to Shelby County, which is not on Marcs, you will need a Phase 2 scanner. Shelby County has there own P25-Phase 2 system for all public safety.
You can also get by with a used Radio Shack Pro-106
The GRE PSR-500, Radio Shack PRO-106 & PRO-651, and Whistler WS1040 are all essentially the same handheld scanner. They are all P25 Phase 1 only and use the same programming software.

Actually not very likely at this point. The system is at about the halfway point in its lifespan (if I recall correctly, service by Moneyrola is guaranteed out to 2037); switching to phase II would require many millions to upgrade system hardware, and lay a heavy burden on subscribers to upgrade or replace radios.

The system has been around for years; if they haven’t done it by now it’s unlikely they will. If they did, it would take quite awhile to complete, so an inexpensive used “starter” scanner is a perfectly reasonable alternative.

It's still a possibility, our state system is possibly gonna do this at some point, and testing it on 2 sites, possibly more, but I believe at least 2. If they are p1 rn and unless they just stay p1 forever or switch systems, which I doubt they would, because that wud be more expensive to change a complete whole state system to something completely different than just switch to p2.. my opinion is that eventually they will change.

But I'm not there I don't know it's just my opinion, and it's mostly based on my state and seems even local county's around me are going P2. So to me id rather be future capable and not be stuck with a scanner that might not work down the road to something I want to listen to. Again it's just my opinion, and he can choose what he think will work best if that's a p2 scanner, cool, if p1 scanner that's cool to.

I asked Google about the cheapest is that 160DN says says232-250$ and guess it don't trunk track but Whistler 1040 and it's like 360$ , and like 80 more bucks u can get a p2 scanner... That's new though if he buys used then it can be way cheaper and that's just Google ai I didn't actually shop around at Whistler, uniden etc so it might be off, I realize some don't got money I myself am one of those. I guess we gave some options and he can figure it out what he thinks will work best for him

I live in Greene County and have an excellent program for the Miami Valley. I have Darke County and all of its neighboring counties in the program. I can also add the neighboring Indiana Counties if you need them. I can teach you how to turn the neighboring counties off and on as you need them. If you get a Uniden BCD436HP, BCD536HP, a Uniden SDS 100 or an SDS 200 I can program those models. If you get one of those models you can download the Sentinel software from Uniden for free and I can teach you how to program using that software. I would be more than happy to help you through the learning curve. My fee is a cup of coffee or a cold coke. LOL. If I can help feel free to reach out.
