I would love to be able to see the information transmitted in the EDACS data stream, but I am very afraid to tear apart my scanner. Is there a non permanent/ non invasive method to get the info out of the scanner and into a computer program? And please go slow, I have no technical experience here. Thanks.

What type of scanner are you using? If its a base unit you could find the information on how to tap into it and then find a professional Technician that will do it for you for a resonable amount. It all depends what scanner you have and how easy it is to get to.
In most cases its a simple matter of soldering two points to a 2.55mm Phono plug.

I can understand your hesitance for handheld scanners and/or you're not good with a soldering iron. However, adding a tap in a neat fashion should never need to be removed, and will add
value should you decide to sell (judging by the requests for this kind of mod).

Where are the taps

I would be doing the mod to my BC780XLT, since I could easily get into the casing. Do you think the local CB repair shop could do the work, if I gave then good directions? I suppose the question I should really be asking is where in the radio are the taps located?

And signed with an amateur radio callsign.

Scary!

Could very well be just an operator and not a Technician. No ?

Anyway Try this site about half way down there is a guide line on the 780XLT Discrim. Tap
Try that with a software Like T4Win or Mtrunker32.

OK. Two things. I knew the radio shop owner long before I became a ham. Heck, when I met him, I didn't even know there was such a thing as amateur radio. So don't think that Amateur radio is that much better than CB. Yes CB has a lot of vugarity, but there have been numerous times when I have heard a ham operator being disresptful or down right rude. People on repeaters are the worst offenders.

Second thing
Is there any information in the control channel audio that can be used to determine radio ID's, or is just noise when the signal gets to the speaker? In other words, is there a way to connect the audio output to a computer for the control channel translation, or is that just not possible? Thanks.

You can use the control data stream to show talkgroup and individual radio IDs, system frequencies, and other data depending on the type of system. You must have a discriminator tap, as audio by the time it reaches the speaker/headphone has been filtered and won't work, even on software the uses the computer soundcard input. The only exception I know is MPT-1327 software that can use headphone jack audio.

You may consider getting an old, cheap scanner and tapping it, dedicating it to the purpose. If you are any good at all with a soldering iron, you can do it yourself;
there is no magic, if you get the right onfo and take a bit of care. The BC780 is easy to mod, although I have not done one myself.
