In either case (no matter which radio you used), you need to install a tap in a circuit that has the raw signal BEFORE it is amplified and reshaped by the audio stages. This is known as a discriminator circuit. This is not something I would recommend for a novice, especially on the SMT circuitry of a PRO96.

If you wish to pursue this, you can get a data slicer that will work with several applications here...

The prices are quite inexpensive.

If you are trying to decode a 9600 baud system, you need not tap anything. There's a special program called Pro96Com that is set up for the PRO96 (and 2096) for that purpose.
This program can be downloaded from the link found in the supporting software section of the PRO-96 Wiki

However, if you're going to tap something, I'd probably try the PRO92. I don't know exactly where the correct tap point is, but I'll bet someone here does. If not, there's a discussion board on PRO92.com, or on the PRO92 Yahoo group. Both of these links, and some others, exist on the PRO92 Wiki

You might want to check in with the CARMA boys; they're actually in the Chicago area, but not all that far from you....and you won't need to tap the 96 to hear the NWCD system, if it's a 3600 baud ASTRO system - as long as it's not encrypted, the 96 should be able to handle it just fine. In fact, I wouldn't doubt that someone in CARMA is already doing it, and may have a .p96 Win96 file for it. Win96 can be found on the PRO96 Wiki, which I gave in a previous answer.
How to find CARMA? Well, they have their own Yahoo group, and their website is...

CARMA

You might also jump on over to the Illinois forum for more info. 73s and GL Mike
