I noticed a User Agent in my Feed Listeners list today that I had not seen before:
[Dataminr Ingest Audio Consumer (ingest@dataminr.com)]
A Google-search later, I found a blog entry on their site describing their use of Artificial Intelligence to analyze scanner feed audio and identify potentially dangerous situations so that they can alert their "clients".
The Power of Streaming Audio Data for Enhancing Emergency Event Detection
It seems to me that they are making money off of the time, effort and electricity that I'm volunteering to provide scanner audio feeds, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I know that some people make money selling 3rd party apps to play the audio, and that seems to be generally accepted, so maybe this isn't that different? Or maybe they should be making some contribution to the upkeep of the data sources that are powering their new "products"?
Thoughts?
