I just passed through Dauphin County today with my 436. The system was tracked well and sounded very good on the 436. I listened to Dauphin from the Lawn service plaza on the turnpike to the 11/15 and 322 interchange while I was driving through the area.

Thanks, stock antenna?

Quick question before I order myself a 396xt.

Between the 396XT and the 436XT, which sounds better? Also, are there any plans for this system to go to Phase 2 in the next year or so?

Subliminal, I can't speak for the 396xt, but my HP-1 picks up the system strong at my home in Newport. And that is with the stock antenna. I have an attic antenna, but did a test for a facebook friend. Someone told him that you can't hear it up in Perry County. I thought it was BS and it was. I do get some Simulcast distortion, however.

Thanks! Hopefully that's similar for the 396. I will mostly be around the middletown area near the river.

Is there a response map showing which companies have what areas? When they dispatch it and say box whatever, I get confused. Still getting used to the way they dispatch.

Not usually available out right. The dispatch center and some departments actually have Box response maps. If you can talk to someone at a local department they have a copy of their box alarms that show the boundaries if nothing else.

Since it's been awhile since the new Unidens came out, more people probably bought them.

How do the new 436 and 536 compare to the 996xt and 396xt on this system with the simulcast?

I thought about getting a 996xt to sit in one place and a 436 for grab and go.

Question for anyone in the know. Any talks of Dauphin going P25 Phase 2 anytime in the next few years?

Lancaster is going Phase 1, Chest is going Phase 2, Berks is Phase 2, York is currently phase 1 going to Phase 2, and Lebanon is just the oddball out there.

I think the bigger question about Dauphin is what they're going to do as far as the T Band sell-out. York isn't going to phase II just to upgrade; they're doing it to get off T Band.

I am very curious what Dauphin County's plan is for the next two years. I haven't heard anything but since our system is just a little bet younger than York's, you think we would have heard something by now. My money says if they end up "upgrading", it'll be 700/800.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but the Derry Township site 500.3875 control channel has been operating with greatly reduced power output for the last 5 days, and there doesn't seem to be any great hurry to fix it. Without a doubt, this is causing dead spots for the township police, fire and EMS apparatus, as the nearby simulcast, ellendale, and sun pipeline towers do not provide adequate coverage in the township as the Derry Twp. site did. Prior to the reduced power output, the coverage was excellent throughout the township as I rode around with my scanner....now I recieve basically no signal at all from the township site, and only recieve about 50% of the calls from the intermittant coverage the other sites provide. I've tested the reception on two different scanners with the same results..the Derry Township site is basically out!

Can someone tell me if Dauphin Co Law enforcement TG are encrypted? I have a customer that wants to get a scanner to monitor police. I'm in Lancaster and dont know much about Dauphin. Also is there a programming file available for Freescan from RR?
Thanks

The dispatch channels are all in the clear but the TAC channels and the channel used for running names and plates are all strapped encrypted. They make heavy use of the encrypted channels.

dauphin cty system

Hi all, I'm new to the new p25 system and having loads of fun trying to get my scanner to hear anything.
I have programmed in the TMI which I suspect is the tower on N. Union street and I get a little from that.
pd disp 2, sometimes FD disp and sometimes EMS disp. It's clear and all I know there's more going on.
I have the state 700 mhz system and it works great as well as the Lancaster system, north west simulcast tower. I know there are problems monitoring the simulcast system but I have been told that some guys are using it with very little problem. I have a radio shack pro-652 right now and a bcd996p2 should be here
tomorrow. Can anyone put forth any suggestions that might help me, I don't want to loose what hair I have.
I live less than 1 mile from the chambers hill tower. so that's my problem, help please i have tried everything
that I could from the manual and other sources.

thanks
Chuck

Chuck, I have never picked up signals on the TMI location. Try loading all of the simulcast frequencies, not just the control channels. I have only ever used the simulcast and with great success.

Chuck,

With you living so close to the tower at the C.H. fire station, it could be overloading your radio and as you stated, the simulcast system (which CH is one of) can be very difficult to monitor when you are in the lower county area, such as we both are. If you did enter in all 10 of the simulcast frequencies as Hosehead suggested and it's working, then great and you can disregard everything below.

I have a Pro-197 which is the sister of your radio and I could never get simulcast "perfect" after years of experimenting with all kinds of antennas until I built my own yagi. After some turning the beam this way and that way, I now have it just right!!

What I suggest that you try is the Derry site. It is a "stand alone" site and is located at the Derry Twp building. I used it for a while and was happy how it sounded. Unfortunately you will not hear Harrisburg City Fire (21101) and Harrisburg City Police (11101) because units that use those talk groups are not registered on that site. Fire Ops 2 (21002) which the HFD uses as their fireground will sometimes be heard on the Derry site but usually not.

Be sure to NOT include talk groups that have an "E" next to them in the P25 system list. They are the encrypted TG's and all you'll hear on there are strange noises.

I once had the TMI site loaded in and found almost nothing on it. The site is located at the TMI Visitor Center.

Good luck and let us know how Derry works for you.

dauphin ct p25 simulcas

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.
I have very good signal strength from the TMI tower.
I checked on the map and according to that it is located
on N. Union street just north of the Middletown High School.
I had the simulcast system programmed in when I first got
the scanner, it worked good for a few months then went
to crap. I bought the programming cable and reset the scanner
and programmed it using the rr data and the cable. no go thought.
I have the Lancaster system in and the 700 mhz system which
both work great.
So I went and bought a BCD996P2 unit, it came today also orderd
the programming cable. I unpacked everything and gave a quick scan of
the manual. I downloaded FREESCAN and started to program things.
The cable DON'T work, instead of a mini usb it has some funky little
connector on it which won't plug in. Now I have to try to get the right
one and return the old one. I also want to find someone that has the right one
and borrow it till my new comes in. Such fun, this thing is a monster
to program manually.
by the way I tried using Derry and I can't get any signal on it or Ellendale.
I have and sdr and an ICOM R7100 receiver and can't see any signals here
on a discone at 35 feet.
