Can anyone advise if the Davidson site is running the simulcast or separate frequencies? If not, I may be able to pick up some of its traffic at my home. Thank you for any replies.

Okay, makes sense. Does anyone monitor with a BC296D? I can’t remember if it holds the number of channels for the simulcast or not.

Any reason why the Davidson site is simulcasting the Mecklenburg site

Because Davidson is in Mecklenburg County. Coverage issues in Davidson, Cornelius and the northern part of Huntersville warranted a north end tower. As for other sites and simulcast, UASI has multiple talkgroups that are simulcasted over different sites. Mooresville fire and police for example is broadcasted over Mecklenburg and Cabarrus. Same with other counties that use UASI.

The Davidson site was put in to fill coverage for the Northeast area of the county. Years ago on the old system they moved the north site to the northwest side, causing coverage issues as noted above. This site should also help Mooresville and Cabarrus as their coverage areas are tight towards that location.

As for other simulcast adding sites, Mooresville would like to add a site toward Statesville to improve coverage for units assisting the county, trips to the jail, and so on. I don’t know if that will happen anytime soon.

Highly doubtful another tower will go up in Iredell. Mooresville and surrounding departments are planning to transition onto Viper and leave UASI.

Is leaving UASI an Iredell decision or a Mooresville decision? I'm curious as to the logistics behind that because they'll still be using a radio system that they don't own outright. Looks like a lateral move to me.

Mooresville decision. Of course they don't own it, to use it they are charged $XXX,XXX.00 a year, hence the transition. Not to mention for interoperability it makes sense. The entire county uses Viper with the exception of the City of Statesville.

I haven't heard anything "official" saying Mooresville is leaving UASI. I'll just say from my perspective, I think they're making a big mistake should they actually leave UASI and go with VIPER. I'll leave it at that.

To get back to my original questions, has anyone used a BC296D to monitor the current UASI P25 on the Mecklenburg Simulcast off the Davidson tower? If so, how has it done?

You can't listen to just the Davidson Site. You must put in the Mecklenburg Simulcast in order to receive it. It's a Simulcast not a Multicast like Viper.

You're right about the simulcast. I guess I should have asked if anyone in southern Mooresville has had any luck receiving the simulcast? Trying to get an idea if I might get the new Davidson tower.

I am in southern Mooresville and I can pick the Mecklenburg Simulcast perfect. Before the Davidson tower went up I couldn't pick up Meck on my scanners. I now listen to Meck Fire and CFD daily.

In China Grove, I show between four and five bars signal on all of my G-Series pagers. Before the site was built, I was only getting between one and two bars with a Yagi antenna. Statesville comes in with between two and three bars on just the pagers.
