Does anyone know if radio shack makes a adapter plug to fit the PSR500 so you dont have to worry about carrying batteries in the car? Chuck N4UED

Being the power requirements and Tip/Ring are identical to the Pro-96 and the fact the Pro-96 AC adapter works on the PSR-500, I would assume the Pro-96 car adapter would work as well.

I really like the one that Advanced Specialties sells. It's a Monster brand with adaptors and switchable power output. They sell it for about 18 dollars. I've seen the same thing on several other sites for 30 bucks. Click on the link below, then "scanners", and scroll down till you see it. I use one to power my PSR-500.

Found a regulated one at Target yesterday for 10 bucks. Works like a charm. Not quite as a small plug as the Monster brand, but a small setup nevertheless. I forget the brand, but it was some Target house brand.

Just make sure you get the tip polarity correct on the jack (the PSR-500 DC input tip is POSITIVE)...

I made that $$ mistake years ago ;-)

I compared the plug size that GRE specifies in the '500's manual, with the adaptaplug sizes at Radio Shack. Its a size "C" plug.

Here's a rule of thumb that's held up for me since the PRO-92 and BC-235.

GRE - size C

Uniden - size B (just remember "B for Bearcat")

Is the Radio Shack the best adapter since it cannot be accidentally switched to a different voltage or would that not likely be a probelm?

Also, can I charge either NiCad or NiMH batteries while listening to the radio or does it have to be turned off to charge?
