I will be in Baltimore in the near future and was wondering if Washington DC police and fire can be heard in Baltimore. I don't want to program my scanner for DC if I will not be able to get a signal.

From within the city of Baltimore, chances are extremely slim that you'll be able to hear D.C. - especially since you'll no doubt be on the radio antenna rather than outside base antenna. I wouldn't bother unless you're going to be spending time at least 10-15 miles south of Baltimore at a minimum. There are no doubt exceptions, e.g., tall buildings in Baltimore that may get the signal but generally the answer is no.

DC freqs

Welcome to Baltimore bg-
Are you partial to listening to the DC action? If not you may want to consider programming your scanner with Baltimore fire and police freqs. Baltimore has many vacant buildings and working fires in those buildings. I don't follow their police freqs, but I'm sure the activity is comparable to a large city.

Not really partial to DC, but it would make me more willing to take my scanner with me. Plus it would be interesting to see how DCs 460mhz system works. I will probably take with me regardless.

Thanks for the input everyone. I may go ahead and program the DC systems in my pro-96 just in case I get the chance to go down to DC while I am in Baltimore.

Just about the same as tthe 800 MHz system, since they're virtually simulcasts of each other.

See our radio database.....from Balt, you'll likely be able to copy the VHF-High re-broadcast of DC Fire Dispatch & PD District 1. US Park Police & US Capital Police (both out of the DC area), on VHF-High, are also pretty easy to pull in from up this way. Needless to say, there is plenty in Balt to tune into.
