DCNR activity

The VHF repeaters in my area (South Central) are active but usually limited to close in
activity in and around parks where they are located.

For many years this area had a high performance repeater on a good
mountain top location which provided good 3-4 county coverage and was
heavily used by both park personnel and enforcement rangers. Since it was
removed and replaced by localized repeaters at each park, the coverage
area has been greatly reduced.

I have had conversations with several rangers who tell me that the new
repeaters in this area not providing the required coverage, and their 800Mhz radios
are basically useless.. Now relying on cell phones in most areas when on patrol....

The Big Flat repeater has been replaced with a narrowband VHF/800 repeater. I don't recall the exact frequeny off the top of my head, but it's definitely operational The coverage is nowhere near what the old Big Flat repeater offered, but it's much better than what the other two area repeaters (Forest District 1 and Pine Grove Furnace State Park) can provide.

The new repeaters are, for one reason or another, designed to cover much less area than what they need to cover. The "Fuller" repeater, at Pine Grove Furnace State Park only covers the park itself and the state forest land immediately surrounding the park, with a portable radio. The "Piney Mountain" repeater, located at Forest District 1, may, on a good day, cover about 25-30% of the 87,000 acres of state forest land in FD-1 on a portable. Cellphones may work on the top of the mountain, but are essentially worthless throughout the rest of the forest district, so I do not see that as a viable option either.

Those emission designators are weird, but the FB8 would lead me to believe that these may be P25 sites.
One of the proposals for the transition to P25 was to utilize VHF in much of the state with 700/800 limited to the metro areas. With the new dualband equipment now available, this is a viable option.

I just noticed these on the database as new. Anyone have any ideas ?

I was researching the emission types and came up with nothing. I have no clue what it is. The Indiana site is within my listening area and I checked, nothing on the air as of yet. With the YW and FB8 whatever it is is trunked. I'm now wondering if this maybe PSP as opposed to DCNR ?

Yes, the designators threw me for a loop too. But the frequencies for the mobiles are indeed FCC allocated for police use. Very interesting. Don't recall offhand which company proposed the use of VHF in the rural counties, or if both proposals intended this. I hope they do get away from openscam here in the more urbanized areas too.

Moving forward, the plan is the migrate everything to P25 away from OpenSky, so no worry there. If they are moving forward with the VHF option, then we should see a lot of licenses from throughout the spectrum. One of the big power companies in the SW area of the state (I forget the name without looking back thru meeting minutes) has frequencies licensed that would be signed over to the state in a partnership (they'd operate on the system). Because of the need for non-interference, we're going to see stuff pop up on a wide variety of VHF allocations.

I noticed the Crawford County freqs/site have a few interesting facts:
1) The 158.910 is the mobile freq for the Girard barracks which borders the Crawford (Meadville Barracks on the Northwest corner (where the site's proposed location is).
2) The 154.830 is for the Corry barracks mobile freq.. but that is at the other end of the Meadville/Corry border (eastern Crawford edge).
3) At that prosed site is a existing cell tower site.
4) The other barracks nearest to this site is not included for mobile freq (Erie).
5) Most of those listed western PA sites are not part of the current 700 P25 system. (Franklin county I have no idea about).

Uncluttered space at VHF for a large trunking system is hard to come by. The feds have agreements with several states for use of federal spectrum as part of statewide TRS's.

Anyone still hearing the Presque Isle rangers/lifeguards in Erie on their old VHF freqs? My understanding was that they went totally to the 800 OpenSky system last year?

Here in eastern pa it was very active from air units to district offices and dcnr units curious my self to see what has switched since they just upgraded the vhf. The old 151.385 and 151.445 for the parks are not used much have mostly switched 800

Pyt. Park still uses 151.445 on a regular basis. Due to my distance from Erie, I don't get the Presque Isle Park on a regular basis. But once in awhile, I do hear some traffic on it (151.445). The Goddard Park still uses 151.1600.

Promised land uses 151.36250 as a tac channel. Mostly its just to report in how many people they have on a hike. When the sky top fire in Monroe county was burning all the whisky units were on it. Air atacked was on 159.285 DNCR Compac.

The do driver look ups on a Wayne county police channel. But don't report locations of stops on it.
