I live in the Chicago suburbs and a while ago heard DEA unit 3203 on the statewide emergency freq advising the state police of an accident with injuries on the tollway. Do federal agencies have their own dispatchers, etc or how do they use their radio systems, call signs?

If they are able to get on the state pd emergency channel then I would think it was just quicker then telling their own dispatch who would then relay the message.

Most major agencies have their own radio operators. Some smaller agencies will use a larger agency's system. For example, this is common with the CBP vhf system where smaller agencies like National Marine Fisheries, Social Security OIG, etc. will subscribe to that system. Howerver, now with the use of cell phones and wireless laptops by law enforcement, a lot of traffic is not being heard on the air these days.

I agree with dave3825. A lot of federal agencies have the local pd's frequencies programmed in their radios. That used to be the case in south Florida before most of the locals went to 800 MHz.

Here in the metro Seattle area the FEDS have been heard on the Seattle area trunked radio systems. .It makes sense to have direct communications with the local law enforcement agencies. .And in the case of the Seattle area law enforcement when working on a raid or stin operation it makes things a lot easier to communicate diirectly with each other. . I am fairly certain all federal agencies have their own dispatchers .. I know a former FBI dispatcher in fact.

To follow up. .Earlier this evening I heard an F.B.I agent in communication with Seattle police on "West dispatch" and "West tac" .. These are designated for downtown Seattle channels. Unit heard "FBI 511"..

Hi Fly and all,

Since nobody answered your question I will. (;->)

"Do federal agencies have their own dispatchers..."

Yes.

"...how do they use their radio systems, call signs?"

It varies, there is no specific answer to that question.

As for interoperability with other agencies they may or may not depending on their needs, however since it's such a hot issue these days everybody's jumping on the band wagon from feds to the local donut chompers.

"What was he saying?"

Go ask the professor li'l buddy, can't you see I'm busy?

Yes.

Not all federal agencies have their own dispatchers. Some don't need them. As a matter of fact, there are federal agencies that are so small they do not even have repeaters, just simplex channels for surveillance. Some agencies piggyback off larger agencies when they need to contact a dispatcher. For example, here in South Florida, ATF uses the CBP after hours and on the weekends for checks, etc. since they don't have anyone in their office at those times. But like I mentioned earlier, due to the existance of wireless laptops, Blackberries, etc, there is little need to actually get on the air.
