Living in Ashe county about the only Viper traffic heard is NCSHP Newton, and what little the county dispatch simulcast . I been monitoring Viper here all week, and it's been extremely boring. So I just gave up on Viper and going to stick with VHF.

Not sure what you are listening to (or not listening to as you are complaining about) but maybe you should expand the TGs you are monitoring. The state event channels have a lot of good activity on them, as do other statewide TGs, the EMOC TGs are another good source of traffic, the fed TGs sometimes are active, the NC National Guard does some ops out that way too both on their TGs and on the HART TGs. Before you give up on VIPER you might want to expand what you are listening too. In my TRX I keep all the TGs in there, and put a number on SKIP that I'm not interested in. You'd be surprised what you can hear from time to time.

I'm monitoring with the Whistler WS 1065 base and Whistler WS 1040 handheld. Using the Wildcard TG feature.
The county here broadcast their VHF traffic over Viper and other then tat and some SHP traffic thats about all I hear on Viper.

All local public safety agencies here are on VHF. Guess i'll let the WS1065 run for another week on Viper with the Wildcard and see if it gets any hits other than NCSHP Newton, if it don't then it would seem a trunking scanner is overkill for this area.

Just to clarify. I have a Viper site on each side of me. If I program in the control and alternate frequencies for these two sites and set the TG as Wildcard, I should receive any Viper traffic that's on these sites?

No need for further replies on this thread. I've decided in the county here there isn't enough digital radio traffic or trunking to justify the use of the WS1040 handheld. So i'll be selling it and sticking to the VHF handheld. Thanks for all the replies.

Some of us would be happy to have everything in the county on one band and conventional
It does make things a lot simpler for sure and they see no changes coming anytime soon in the future. I'm even considering parting with the Whistler WS1065 because it's overkill for what I monitor. I'm considering a Uniden BC355 or possibly a Uniden BC365CRS.

Well I made the move, sold the Whistler WS1065 and the WS1040. And purchased a Uniden BC125AT and a BC365CRS. Came out money ahead and have all I need to monitor all county Fire/EMS and LEO. :)
