Can anyone tell me if a bad car alternator can cause a scanner to go deaf (temporally I hope) ?

If the alternator put out enough RF to overload your scanenr it is entirely posible it has messed it up, at the same time your car stereo and many of your other electronics would be a good bit screwey.

Is it still deaf with the engine off ? If it isn't,then the alternator may have a bad diode,and is producing AC which could screw up the scanner.

Try it with the car off,or with a separate power supply to see if it works.If it doesn't,then you have a problem with the scanner.
