I'm starting this thread so as not to confuse matters in the Forest Rangers thread.

Here's what I've been hearing lately on Encon law enforcement channels:

159.225/94.8

New Paltz Base calling Region 3 units "on Cat Head" (I think). No answer, so I suspect he was using the wrong CTCSS for R3.

Red Hook calling Region 5 units. Could not make out site names.

Ray Brook calling Region 5 units and clearing Belfry, Prospect, and Cat Head (and others I couldn't make out through the static).

Red Hook and Ray Brook are physically within the boundaries of Region 4.

159.330/94.8

Schenectady Base calling Region 4 units and clearing Buck and Petersburg.

Dave:

Here is the information I know about the ECO's radio system. There is no Red Hook dispatch center. Ray Brook is the primary dispatch center for Region 5. I don't know why New Paltz would be using Cat Head since Cat Head is located in southern Hamilton County. Ray Brook is in Region 5 in Essex County. For a break down of the Regions, go to NY DEC website.

Region 4 ECO dispatch center is Schenectady on 159.330.

The ECO's radio's are set up as follows - regions in ()

Channel:
17 - 155.370 - Statewide Law enforcement
18 - 159.225 - Belfrey (5)
19 - 159.225 - Sam's Point (3), Binghamton (7), Hartzfelt (9), Black (5)
20 - 159.225 - Jackie Jones (3), Prospect (5), Georgetown (7)
21 - 159.225 - Huntington (1), Gore (5), Cortland (7), Wethersfield (9)

25 - 159.225 - Jamestown (9)

Is there a regional office in Red Hook (Dutchess County)?

There may be more than one Cat Head Mountain. A lot of the mountain names in New York are duplicated.

In Herkimer County - Encon Officers (DEC Police) are direct dispatched on Herkimer County MRD (155.610). They also call in and out of service to the 911 center and use the center for data (traffic, DLICs, wants & warrants checks).

There is not much activity locally on 159.465 (Starr Hill). I do hear some activity on West Martinsburg Repeater.

Not so long ago there was much more radio traffic on the DEC & Ranger Repeaters. I have old radio programming data showing 159.330 as "Flood Control"??? Maybe Dave NF2G or philb623 can explain.

Enjoying these threads!

OK, I goofed on the location of Ray Brook. Somehow I thought it was in Dutchess County.

"Red Hook" could have been somebody mumbling "Ray Brook" I suppose. Reception was very scratchy, no matter which repeater they said they were using.

I have a map of DEC regions on my website. Maybe I will update it to add dots for the repeaters or something....

Maybe there is a Cat Head in the Catskills somewhere.

Cathead Mtn is about 5 miles (maybe less) from my house. I have taken photographs of helicopters taking things up to the summit from Rt 30 in Hope.
There is a radio tower (NYSP & ENCON) and a windmill up there. At one time there was also a fire tower on Cathead, but no longer.

John - I know that the DEC police officers where issued Nextels several years ago and tend to use them more then the radio. I am not sure if they are still using them.

159.315 is the operations frequency for both region 4 & 8. Region 8 also uses this frequency for flood control. 159.330 as far as I know has been the primary repeater frequency for Region 4. It may be that when the FCC was assigning frequencies that 159.330 was assigned as a flood control frequency on the paper work submitted.

ENCON law enforcement also uses a channel that they refer to as 'federal'. This is NOT 155.475, but it is in use. Also I have monitored the ENCON police using 159.225 simplex, referred to as car to car.

Actually to further correct my post, Cathead is approximately 9.5 miles from my house.
Seems closer than that when you drive there.

Heheheheh. Thanks.

Here is something to consider:

Would you have put your street address up there? You have provided information that is even more precise than that.
