To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'd like to be able to decode the FDNY IDs that are broadcast from the new XTS3000 portables on the tactical fireground channels. Does anyone know if the BC796 series scanner will do that, or if any of them will?

Thanks!

None of the scanners will respond to individual radio IDs. They only identify talkgroups.

Decoding ID's

Well not exactly, if they are using MDC or other major forms of unit IDs you might want to look for a Unit ID display/decoder unit. Cimarron and several others all made these. They could be wired into a console or even a mobile and since you only need the rx side for working, it could turn out to be a fun project, a cheap scanner, a schematic for both and you could be receiving the IDs. However realize in heavy traffic they go by fast and even the buffer can only hold so much, but it can be done. Some searching could lead you to find a used box, but you would have to know the ID scheme, such as MDC600, 1200, GE Star etc to make sure you get the right box.

The current operation of radio id's with the fdny is being sent in digital mode and the radio then transmits the voice analog.
This is a new feature released by motorola and used by the FDNY and various other agencies. A FD on Long Island recently demo'd it.

It's called Fire Ground Communications System.

Do a search on batlabs or motorola for more info.

Do you need the Fireground option to decode this type of ID or can it be decoded by any Digital ID Display capable XTS or AS?

Is this what the Enhanced in Enhanced Digital ID display is refering to?

Good question, although I am familiar with the option and one agency I consult for is currently looking into this option merely for the ptt id aspect, although Not one of Motorola's top selling points, is one of the BEST options available in the Fireground package.

Where everyone else is used to the "beeeeeeeep" upon press of the PTT (which is the id being sent), the f/g option in the xts radios offers a "quick digital packet" which transmits the unique id of the radio (up to 8 characters long) and then the radio opens up the mic to TX analog for Fireground communications.

I just wanted to mention all of the above in case anyone reading the post at this point in not familiar with Motorola’s Fireground operation.

Anyhow, trying to answer your question, I am not sure. Theoretically if you have a digital capable subscriber unit in vicinity of the "location", and having that radio's RX rule set to Mixed-Mode, you might be able to rx the id's AND the analog audio. There might however be some issues with older host/dsp and "straight through" receive when the carrier switches from digital to analog. Also, I'm not sure if the carrier drops for a few ms during the transition from dig to analog.

This is an interesting post. Maybe along the lines for some of the astro pros on batlabs.com

Anyone care to chime in?

Furthermore, If anyone wants to read some release literature on the Fireground Communications Package, feel free to email me at ALLPLOWEDOUT@OPTONLINE.NET and put motorola fireground in the subject line and I will gladly email you a few PDF files.
