Some of you may have read the title and laughed, but was curious if anyone even tried to run comparison tests to see the what the signal strength differences were.
No, it's likely that at least some of those 3 might put out too much amplification for a portable - say, like a Sony 7600 - to handle without overloading. 'Padding down' refers to cutting down that amplification - which is sometimes done by adjusting a small potentiometer - which looks like a small screw on a pad (hence the phrase).

It's a bit squirrely to try to compare the two. But it's a worthwhile educational experiment nevertheless

It's nothing to laugh about as they won't be in the same league as an outdoor antenna. I don't care if it's made by NASA -- no INDOOR antenna -- will compete with an outdoor model
No argument there, Nick. But there an awful lot of folks that can't put antennas outside because of the condo nazis or other reasons. Loops are a decent alternative...Mike
Sure I understand that Mike but I was just responding to his performance comparison of the models listed. There is no comparison.
Indoor loops have their purpose but it's simply about compromise and nothing else.
The comparison you made wasn't about the models I listed, you made a comparison between indoor and outdoor antennas.
WTF are you talking about? You listed an indoor portable loop and then outdoor loops in your subject line!
