Some of you may have read the title and laughed, but was curious if anyone even tried to run comparison tests to see the what the signal strength differences were.

As the Degen loop is very tiny in comparison to all the others you mentioned (the loops on the 3 alternatives are much bigger), and have a different amplifier (the Degen is tuned and the others are rather broadbanded, AFAIK), I rather doubt that such a comparison would even be valid.

The Degen is really set up for portables, which can't handle the amount of RF that your 3 alternatives would provide. You could probably use those 3 on a portable if you padded it down some

Thanks for the feedback ka3jjz

When you mentioned it could be used with portables if it was padded down, are you referring to something like a isolation transformer to reduce local RF noise?

No, it's likely that at least some of those 3 might put out too much amplification for a portable - say, like a Sony 7600 - to handle without overloading. 'Padding down' refers to cutting down that amplification - which is sometimes done by adjusting a small potentiometer - which looks like a small screw on a pad (hence the phrase).

Thanks my friend, I decided on an AOR LA400, so I will keep an eye out for that adjustment. This will be primarily for my Satellit 800 but would like to test it out on my PL660 and DE1102 also.

I am guessing a BNC to mono adapter might be needed to connect this to the antenna jack on a portable, idk.

Additionally, I plan on building the hula hoop antenna I saw lowfreq posted in another thread here. I look forward to comparing the AOR to the hula hoop to see the differences of an active loop vs. a resonant loop.

I would predict that the AOR will work just fine with the 800, but it might well overload the 660 and Degen radios. You may need to attenuate the gain a bit when using it on these radios.

Keep in mind that a hula loop is not amplified - the AOR (overpriced that it is) does have an amp. It's a bit squirrely to try to compare the two. But it's a worthwhile educational experiment nevertheless

It's nothing to laugh about as they won't be in the same league as an outdoor antenna. I don't care if it's made by NASA -- no INDOOR antenna -- will compete with an outdoor model of equal performance. Even a simple wire dipole antenna would likely win any indoor/outdoor battle.

Attic antennas are also considered INDOOR antennas. As weak as SSB signals are at times, the physical antenna must be outside for maximum performance.

Any my above point completely neglects the QRM space of an indoor structure.

SNR is the name of the game.

No argument there, Nick. But there an awful lot of folks that can't put antennas outside because of the condo nazis or other reasons. Loops are a decent alternative...Mike

Since I live in a condo I can't throw up an Alpha Delta DX Ultra antenna. Otherwise I would...

Indoor antenna is my only option.

Sure I understand that Mike but I was just responding to his performance comparison of the models listed. There is no comparison. :)

Indoor loops have their purpose but it's simply about compromise and nothing else.

The comparison you made wasn't about the models I listed, you made a comparison between indoor and outdoor antennas.

If you have the real estate to put up a gigantic dipole, sloper, or whatever, and no HOA to stop/harass you, that's fantastic, good for you! I have to "compromise"

WTF are you talking about? You listed an indoor portable loop and then outdoor loops in your subject line!

WTF am I talking about?

Each and every one those companies make an indoor loop.

That's one of the reasons why I hate these message boards. Lack of common courtesy and respect.

It's easier to ask and/or clarify vs. assuming and wasting time.

Hey Mike,

I apologize for my bellicosity on your forum. I realize I am new here and do not have the same level of understanding when it comes to antenna's and their capabilities.

Additionally, I appreciate you staying on the topic of my post and answering more than one of the questions I have had. Thank you!

I look to be here for a long time and "tune in" on as much knowledge as I can.

I live in a single story apartment & put my indoor Wellbrook LA5030 on the wall of my patio sitting on a cheap camera tripod. Works extremely well & nobody has ever complained about it.
