A $22 million improvement plan will upgrade the department's 10 radio towers with digital technology.

And a new tower will be erected at the East Precinct, near the Mall at Stonecrest and Arabia Mountain, where officers have frequently had trouble using their radios.

The department is steadily replacing its hand-held analog radio with newer models that will hook up to the digital, virtually static-free network.

More Dekalb stuff from AJC...

Laptop of luxury: DeKalb officers long have had computer terminals in cars, allowing them to check on a tag number and, more recently, to keep up with dispatches and communicate with one another.

All those laptops are getting new software to handle tasks like new state accident reports.

There are plans to distribute extra laptops so officers working certain off-duty jobs, such as security at hospitals or malls, can write electronic incident reports. The department is looking into using personal digital assistants for some tasks.

Auto theft detectives who regularly check vehicle ID numbers on recovered cars might be able to walk down a line of cars with a PDA to perform that task.

The write stuff: Soon, you'll have no trouble reading an officer's handwriting on your traffic ticket.

Four officers are testing new software and printers that allow them to enter traffic ticket information on the laptops in their patrol cars.

A small printer produces a ticket that looks like a restaurant bill, though considerably less appetizing.

Sweet.........I guess. I was born and raised in DeKalb and I see they still have plenty of taxpayer money to spend. Got the hell out of that sinkhole. :)

Re: digital

Any new time table for the conversion from the older analog system? Last I heard it was last November. Will this be all public safety and government services or will the analog system be maintained for non-public safety stuff?

ButchGone,

I'm asking the same question. Also, I wonder about the timeframe of the planned implementation of the new digital system. I may be wrong, but I think that it took Cobb County about two years to have their system digital up and running.

Cobb guinea pigged the Water Department with their P25 system. They started transitioning CPD over a good year later. It was fun listening to the officers keying up saying "Can you hear men now!" all over the county!

BTW - This thread started almost 2 years ago!

Is Stone Mountain Park going to be part of the new Dekalb system or keep their own?
Any word on encryption?

The Blackberry's with GCIC/NCIC access are awesome when you are away from your car by the way but sometimes slow.

Newb here, so be gentle.

Will the bcd396t (being digital) still pickup the old analog Dekalb system?

Yes it does. I checked the digital system this afternoon, no voice traffic, but it is showing 3 to 5 bars on the reception meter.

Gator,
Is bcd396t a user friendly model or do you suggest a better? Price is no object. I dont know how to program. I can learn though.

I met a DKPD MPO (Master Police Officer) the other day, asked him about the new digital system, but he seemed kinda puzzled about my question. He did show off his XTS portable and SAID that they were all digital, but I know they are not. I have a feeling that as soon as all the officers and FD/EMS get all their equipment, they will make a one-cut switch over.

Mike, there is definitely no activity on the P-25 system other than the CC. I have been monitoring whenever I'm in the county. Hopefully, the signal will be as strong as the analog system at my qth.
