Yes sporadic E skip can happen and allow very long distance reception. I once talked to a guy in Havana on 2m ham with only 100 watts. You could be experiencing a thermal inversion layer. This can cause a tunneling effect allowing vhf to travel maybe 100 miles. I occasionally hear McAllester SO vhf which is about 75 miles away. Inversions happen usually in the morning when the sun first starts to heat the atmosphere. There are other factors that influence reception. I monitor the Marine Band. I will hear the CG info broadcasts for the KM nav. waterway. I am kind of at the edge of their ground wave propagation and it will be from crystal clear to just barely above the noise. You may be right at the edge of their radiation pattern so depending on conditions you may or may not pick them up.
