Paonia man killed in 800-foot plunge
Staff Report
CRAWFORD — A Paonia man died Tuesday afternoon, when his vehicle plunged off the side of Highway 92 and rolled multiple times down a gorge for 800 feet.
The Colorado State Patrol reported Alfred Rankin II, 36, died at the scene of the accident when he was partially ejected from the vehicle. His wife, 29-year-old Leticia Rankin, miraculously survived with moderate injuries, CSP Cpt. Clark Bates said.
The crash occurred approximately 25 miles east of Crawford on a section of Highway 92 known for its steep, winding curves and numerous drop offs.
“In that area, there are many, many places that have deep drop-offs into a steep gorge,” Bates said. “This vehicle failed to negotiate one of those curves and went 800 feet down the gorge. Amazingly, one person did survive in this, but sadly, we did lose one individual.”
The Rankins’ 2000 Dodge Durango was eastbound and downhill on the highway at an estimated speed of 40 mph. Leticia reportedly lost control of the SUV as it rounded a left curve, and the vehicle spun counter-clockwise. She overcorrected, sending the vehicle clockwise. It slid sideways off the right shoulder before rolling down the mountainside at a section of the road that did not have a guardrail.
Bates credited the use of seat belts with saving her life. Alfred was also wearing a seat belt, but was partially ejected and killed. Airbags in the vehicle did not deploy.
The posted speed limit was 35 and Bates said there was an advisory speed limit of 25 mph.
Neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected in the crash, the report said.
