Barricades going up in the area of Zuni and Speer for a possible active shooter in a multi-story building at that intersection. Speer is now closed in the area. This is basically one block west of I-25 at Speer. Anyone feel free to take over as dodging bullets while writing posts is dangerous...

Now an urgent request to CDOT to close NB I-25 at Speer.

I heard this incident started in Englewood at an apartment in the area of Belleview and Broadway and the suspect caught a taxi to the area in Denver. About as much as I could pick up.

Appears this has evolved into a barricaded individual in a room at the Budget Host motel at Wyandot and 28th. Within a block or two of Speer and Zuni. No longer an active shooter...

Where did the sniper / active shooter thing come from? Local news reporting it was a warrant service on the suspect at that hotel...

All I heard was he was possibly armed from the burglary attempt in Englewood. Then caught a taxi north to near the hotel location. Englewood was in contact with taxi company throughout and asked DPD to respond to the hotel. Like you, I didn't hear this being a sniper situation.

Edit: I think one single shot was allegedly shot in the Englewood apartment by the subject before leaving that scene.

Addtitionally, Denver EMS was staged in the area for an injured employee of the hotel. Unclear if he was shot. Also unclear at the time if the windows of the hotel were broken with gunfire from the suspect or by other means but video seems to support the "other means"

Negotiations are ongoing now as DPD is in phone contact with the rather animated suspect. Hope to get official word soon.

Suspect was taken into custody at 2316. Seconds after a concussion was heard and a flash observed in the room thru optics.

Now an urgent request to CDOT to close NB I-25 at Speer.

I heard them requesting the closure of NB and SB I-25 exit ramps onto Speer, not the closure of I-25.

But all in all, good catch and thanks for putting this incident up on the board Rob!

This ^

I have not listened to the audio - Did DPD dispatch or LEO say Active Shooter? This is the second or third time now I have seen Active Shooter thrown out for something that turned out to be a simple (relatively speaking) issue. Very different tactics for an AS vs. barricade/hostage.

Explains why EPD had no one available for the fire SB Santa Fe @ Dartmouth and asked for Sheridan PD. Radio tfc was that SB broke out the glass in the window. Then was sticking his head out yelling to police to "take a head shot." SB waved his handgun around "wildly" a lot, but I never hrd any shots fired.

This was not an active shooter incident and most of the traffic other than initial is not available in the archives.

There was a lot of traffic with the Englewood PD when they initially responded to the burglary attempt (around 6:00pm). Heard them say they found one spent round casing in the apartment then a couple minutes later suspected the bullet went through a neighboring apartment's wall. They were concerned he was was "high" when he left the scene. I didn't catch how they tracked him to the taxi (but amazing they did!)...first I heard on the radio was they were tracking him down I-25 around Alameda, then 20th when they called out for Denver's assistance. They warned he had a loaded gun at that point and secured the burglary scene.

From the RR archives

5:57 pm to 6:27 pm
http://areg.radioreference.com/20121127/3/201211271857-615250-32.mp3

Time stamps in ( ) are feed archive rough time stamps

1822 (25:40) Code-10 cover 20th and Zuni for Englewood following a party in a taxi that has a gun.

1823 (25:53) Units asked for clarification on the situation

1823 (25:54) Weapon stolen and suspect held victim with gun

1823 (26:07) 166 was already right there and didn't see anything

1823 (26:20) 172 breaking off previous call

1823 (26:20) 175 breaking off previous call

1823 (26:32) Units asking if Edgewater is in the parking lot yet, Dispatcher says its Englewood not Edgewater

1824 (heard on other archive) Units asked, "Are they undercover?" The dispatcher said, "Finding that now."

1825 (28:00) Dispatcher: The Englewood Officers are in marked units and in uniform

1826 (28:34) Units: Are they in the BH motel?

1826 DIspatcher: Yes should be in front there in a silver Nissan SUV on the phone with the cab company 2844

1826 (29:05) Then the dispatcher said the wrong time stamp of 1726 (one hour behind)

1826 (29:45) Units: Everyone slow down to code-9 because we cant find Englewood officers. What is the description of the suspect again?

1827 Suspect has on a purple and blue pajama bottom, red Nebraska jersey with a white coat 6-3 thin build (at first they said purple and blue pajama TOP with RED jacket)

6:27 pm to 6:57 pm
http://areg.radioreference.com/20121127/3/201211271927-542849-32.mp3

1828 (1:13) The party is on the second level with a gun... lets hold the air

1828 (1:16) An officer yell something, couldn't make it out

1829 (2:03) They declared the incident an "All Command" event.

1829 (2:22) We need someone to bring up a rifle. He is up above us. The dispatcher asked what location they needed the rifle and he replied that he was at the hotel with the party with a gun.
I think she meant where at the hotel :)

1831 (4:15) Dispatcher: To clarify we have no one at the hotel with a gun. (I don't understand why she said that)

1831 (5:38) 174 asked if it was the room closest to the south end on the second floor

1832 (5:45) 2nd level south southern most room and I have my long rifle on the front.

1832 (5:53) alright it looks like he might be trying to bust out this back window here

1833 (6:19) Do you have a good spot to stop him if he comes out?

1833 (6:23) I do. I've got my shotgun on him

1835 (8:14) Leave the air open for 72 or 74 to answer

1836 (9:44) 70 asked officers arriving to shut down the surrounding streets.

1837 (10:26) Dispatcher asked 70 where they wanted the CP and they replied he was on the phone with the suspect

1837 (10:41) They replied that they wanted the CP at 26th and Alcott in the parking lot

1838 (11:02) Requested another DPD Citywide broadcast for additional cars. The DPD Citywide Simulcast talk group then aired request for additional cars.

1838 (11:40) The dispatcher asked if he wanted a TAC channel for the incident and he said they will make the D1 Dispatch channel into a TAC channel and also made him the incident commander. At that point they began using both this main channel and D1 TAC for this incident.

It goes on, but as many have said on here already, there was no mention of active shooter at all.

Hello all. Just now had a chance to post again. Good to see this energetic and professional discussion regarding the terms I used at the start the thread. I'll just admit right away that I screwed up. I usually am very vigilant to post only what I've heard and seen first-hand and vette the info I get from our assignment desk before I post but circumstances last night got the better of me. It was described to me as a possible sniper and I posted it as such. I could go on but my apologies to all for letting my guard down. Will endevour to be more vigilant in future posts.

-Rob

I just listened to a not widely available archive of the DPD D1 TAC channel where units not dealing directly with the suspect were diverting traffic and were saying things like, "You are in the line of fire” (at 1854 and 1901 hrs). I can understand why that could be misconstrued out of context.

There was a lot of radio tfc about being in the line of fire. The outer perimeter must have been pretty loose. At one point even children walked past the building. Also transmissions referring to police and the media being in the line of fire.
