Denver Police have the area surrounding a parking lot at 18th and Market closed off as they conduct an investigation.

According to 9NEWS Photojournalist Manny Sotelo, three detectives and four crime scene investigators are combing through the evidence. So far, they have placed at least 49 evidence markers at that location, making it a big crime scene to process.

Sotelo says there also appears to be a rifle or a shotgun lying on the ground and a white Chevy Impala parked in the middle of the lot – both of which appear to be involved in the incident.

We don't have details yet about the shooting and do not know if anyone was hurt.

9NEWS has a crew on scene and will update this story as more information becomes available.

Denver Police say at least one person was killed when a "gun battle" broke out between two groups. Police have closed off the area surrounding a parking lot at 18th and Market as they conduct an investigation.

A woman, who did not want to be identified, told 9NEWS she saw the shooting happen just before 2 a.m. She says she saw a crowd of people leaving a nearby nightclub and three fights broke out in the parking lot.

"It looked like a big fight was starting to happen at the parking lot," said witness Mychael Oddson.

That's when gunfire echoed through lower downtown.

"I'd say about 30 shots broke out boom, boom, boom," said Oddson.

Witness Bart Hubbuch described the incident as a "total mob scene."

"We heard three very loud gunshots in a row," said Hubbuch. "The there was a pause, then there was about eight to 10 gunshots in a row."

Denver Police Spokesman Sonny Jackson says officers in the area heard the shots and immediately rushed to the scene.

"Literally three to four minutes after that, it seemed like the entire Denver Police Department came streaming down," said Hubbuch.

Jackson says when police arrived, they saw the "gun battle" ongoing between the two groups.

"At that point, officers engaged one of the groups that was firing their weapons," said Jackson.

Jackson says at least two people were shot and taken to Denver Health Medical Center. One man was pronounced dead at the hospital, the other underwent surgery. That person's condition was not immediately known.

According to Jackson, it was not immediately known who fired the fatal bullet, but he says the man who was killed was a suspect.

"We definitely saw one dead body," said Hubbuch. "They didn't even try to revive him."

Jackson says there were also "several others" taken to the hospital. No police officers were taken to the hospital.

According to Jackson, one weapon was recovered at the scene and the crime scene investigation will continue for some time.

"It was a very intense scene I wasn't expecting," said Hubbuch. "You know, I come to Denver, I always thought this was the safe sort of fun area or whatever, but yeah it was scary."

Police are asking any witnesses who may have fled the scene to contact them immediately at 720-913-2000.

Feed archive on ScanDenver question.

Just tried listening to last night DPD shooting downtown. Just curious why there are 5-6 minutes missing from some feeds, for example 6/22 1:36AM To 1:44 then skips tp 1:51AM to 2:06AM it looks to me like the shots fired call happened sometime in those missing 6 minutes.

Thanks

Denver Police Department issued the following press release about Sunday morning's Fatal Shooting:

On June 22, 2008, members of the Denver Police Department were assisting with the out crowd movement in the lo-do area near 18th and Market Streets.

At approximately 1:50 A.M. officers observed what appeared to be a fight in the parking lot and moved into the area to break it up. While doing this, officers heard gunshots. As they investigated those shots, officers observed two men exchanging gunfire.

Two Denver officers confronted one individual armed with a shotgun. This male turned on the officers and fired in their direction. The officers returned fire striking this male subject. A second male then took the shotgun and engaged the officers.

The officers fired again, also striking this male. Paramedics transported both males to Denver Health Medical Center where one has died from his injuries.

The second remains in critical condition with gunshot wounds. The third male discharging a handgun fled from the area prior to police contact. Through the investigation, detectives identified four additional individuals who sustained non life threatening injuries from shotgun pellets.

At the time of the shooting, there were dozens of people present in the parking lot, many of whom left prior to the arrival of investigators. The investigation continues at this time.

The names of the victims and officers are being withheld pending further investigation, positive identification and notification of family and next of kin.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Denver Police Department at 720-913-2000 or anonymously through crime stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).
