Derry PD 3rd shift radio usage

I’ve monitored DPD for many years and have always received them very well, However I noticed once they sign on at the start of the shift there is very little to no radio traffic, Just wondering if they predominantly use the M.D.T.’s on third shift or are they encrypted?, Anyone have any ideas?

With encryption you would still notice radio traffic; your scanner would likely just mute it. MDTs cannot realistically replace all radio traffic as the officers are not glued to the inside of their cars. Option 3, its Derry NH at night... it's probably just slow. Short of medical calls and property checks, some of these departments (even the "larger" ones) can go a few days without any calls on the overnight shift. That's likely your culprit.

Depends on the scanner, some MUTE others still pass the ENC Audio (RS and GRE are two)

I think ypu answered your own question. 3rd/overnight shift = not many people awake = not many calls = not much radio traffic.

Thanks for the input and I agree that they probably have quite a few slow nights which would account for the minimal radio traffic.

Its somewhat uncommon but some agencies will just be dispatched by the county at night if there is a lower call volume. Perhaps listen on Rock East for any addresses in Derry.

Yes but sometimes the dispatchers need to go home and sleep. So they have someone else take over, perhaps at lower call volumes.

They very well could switch to county overnight if there was a staffing shortage. Derry PD dispatches themselves and the FD does the same. FD is also subcontracted by Auburn, Chester, and Windham. I believe DPd staff as an officer on the desk with the dispatcher, but that could be different now. So if they don’t have the ability to staff a mid shift, I suppose it is completely possible to swap to Rock West until the morning.

I've noticed my SDS100 locking on Derry PD with no audio. I suspect they're using encryption more often than not. I hear them every once in a while.
