Today, I heard "Des Moines units" being dispatched on Tukwila PD. I know often times two cites may share the same radio channel. However, why does Des Moines have their own dispatch channel (which I have heard in use) if they are sometimes dispatched by TPD? Does this have to do with a dispatcher shortage or something?

Des Moines and Tukwila are patched together all the time. They share a dispatcher.
The patch rotates at times. Meaning sometimes you have to listen to Des Moines main and tac talk groups and sometimes you listen to Tukwila main and tac talk groups.
This is only apparent to us scanner listeners, the user radios display their respective talk group.

The Admin talk groups are never patched together so they only carry their own traffic

You will notice the same thing with the Auburn and Algona/Pacific talk groups.

I set up my scanners to monitor both agencies talk groups so I don't have to worry about which one is chosen for the primary patch.
