I am a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and I am working on a land mobile/portable marine VHF radio station to install in my RV.

I plan to build a box or purchase a trucker's slip seat radio box, and mount in this the equipment I need. I would then be able to remove the setup from the RV when using it for recreational use.

The idea of this setup is to be the base for the Auxiliary units on the lake. We are required to have a land based radio watchman during operations, and the RV would provide a great place to work out of.

Being that this rig is specifically for use during operations, and will be removed when not in service, I don't have to worry too much about space restrictions.

As of now, here are some things I am considering:
* I want to be have at least two radios in the rig so that I can monitor multiple frequencies easily.
* I want to be able to receive GPS lat/lon coordinates from units on the lake (DSC)
* I want to plot the lat/lon on a laptop computer
* If possible, I would like to be able to overlay weather data (radar, satellite, etc) on the chart where vessels are plotted
* I would like to be able to record on the laptop (with timestamp) VHF communications
* I want to have a good antenna, and this antenna does not have to be extended while the vehicle is in motion (perhaps a telescoping pole could be implemented if such a thing is out there)

Any other ideas you guys can think of?

Suggestions on radios? Antennas? Computer software?

I am an amateur radio operator, but I am pretty new to marine VHF. I know that these things are possible, but I don't know if it's feasible so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Some what you are asking could done and others are above average skills or too high in costs. Most of the questions should be answered by the Auxiliary chain of communications in your local Flotilla or Division (FSO-CM or SO-CM). I can’t speak for all policies in all the CG AUX Districts, but do currently serve as Assistant District Staff for Communications. I provided my email address to assist you with CG AUX general questions, since this topic is not of interest to most the members on this Board. Also only a very few know the policies of the CG AUX to be to discuss this topic. These questions are better handled internally within the CG AUX. Looking at your user name on the website, I feel you are located in my Auxiliary District.
