• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Re: the basic desktop charger:
-From the pic above it looks like there are 3 lights on the front. Is that correct? What do they indicate?
-Does the unit detect a completed charge and stop charging making it safe to leave the pager in the charger?
-It looks like no from the pic, but is it possible to charge a spare battery by itself?

1) just the center led lights up “green” to indicate its powered on when it’s plugged in. It always stays green whether the pager in the cradle or out assuming the base is plugged into a power source. The other two “dots” to the left and right of the green led; I believe are just placeholder molds for future leds and don’t light up.

2) The G4, in my case, once it’s fully charged shows a charge complete message in the G4 screen while sitting in the cradle. To see it,

you just hit the back arrow key on the left front face of the G4 while it’s in the charging cradle to see that message. The red led at the top of the G4 turns solid green when its fully charged and complete. I’m not sure internally if the charge shuts off and just powers the unit once it’s fully charged. I just take it out the next morning and it runs for 11 hours of continuous use before I place it back in the charging cradle for its over night charge again.

3) no, you can’t charge just the battery by itself. You have to place the whole unit in to get it to charge.

One thing I have noted is that the OEM cable micro USB connector does not make a secure connection with the charger base input. Comparing it to others I own shows that the connector itself is shorter than others. I now am using another cable.

Hi Guys, I see the thread has taken a few turns but all related to charging and mentioning spare battery so here goes. Has anyone found a way of charging a spare battery for their G4/5 so basically you can always have one in the ready ? I love my G4 and would be inline to buy another but really need a spare battery. I also wonder if mine was not great when I got it. I bought a new unit last year and after back and forth a few times with Unication (and waiting for new firmware release) they identified that mine was beyond the firmware of having issues so I sent it back and they sent me another device and frankly I think the battery on the refurb/used one they sent me back wasn't so great. I just hate buying a new batt if it's not better than what I have and if they can't be charged without the unit. Thanks!

What type of usage are you getting out of your device? Are you running volume at full and brightness high?
I get 10+ hours usage with mine, brightness at mid way and volume at 40 when in the office, 80 when driving.

I'm running 70 volume when driving, sitting on a desk nearby 40ish. I would say brightness is fairly low but don't remember what and it's not near me to check. Also the display set to go dark really quick. Generally 5-6 hours. (speaking of speaker - dang I wish they would offer a retrofit of a new better one:) That and no capability to charge a battery out of the device are my only dreams of a change.

If your getting half the battery life others are getting i would ask what version of firmware and PPS your using.
Something doesnt quite seem right there.
Also if your monitoring a busy system and its always going off then 5-6 hours could be considered normal.
