How does their system work exactly, I know this much, They have A9 Spectra's tied to a Vehicular Repeater System/PAC-RT and they carry HT1000's outta unit, I was wondering, what exactly is a "UHF Extender", If you put 460.15 in your scanner and you're close enough (1-1½ Miles) to an NMSP Unit, you can hear everything that's coming through their Spectra, is that part of the VRS/PAC-RT or part of this "UHF Extender"?

You are talking about several of the same type of set ups here. A VRS and a PAC/RT are the same beasts, just different generations used on different radio's. Both do the same thing. Repeat a mobile radio onto a different frequency, usually for a handheld radio. VRS's are used on the Spectra's and X9000's. Pac/Rt's are used on most all of the older radios...Micors, Maratrac's, Mitreks, Etc.
NMSP has VHF Spectras in their cars, and have a UHF VRS to repeat to their UHF HT1000 handhelds. When they get out of the car, they will push a button on the spectra head that will turn on the VRS, so they can use their handhelds. 460.15 is the VRS frequency. The HT1000's will talk on 460.15 to the VRS, and the VRS will retransmit on the Spectra. Also, the VRS will relay anything that the spectra is recieving back to the HT1000 on 460.15 as well. You do have to be close, as the VRS only uses low power....about a watt, I think, and has a quarterwave antenna. If you do happen to hear traffic on one, you will hear the signal "chopping", as the VRS stops transmitting every millisecond or so to "listen" and see if the portable needs to talk. The Portable has priority.

Oh ok, so that would explain the "UHF Extender"... and the diff between a PAC and VRS, thx RC. Also I noticed the "chopping" u mentioned, a short click every few miliseconds or so, doesn't really effect the ability to understand the transmission tho. 
Pretty cool, except when secondary unit's show up to a call with their VRS on (not knowing the primary unit already had his/hers on) and an officer xmits outta their unit and more than 1 VRS is txing "10-9 u were coming in 10-1 on ur last transmission" oh well, we all make mistakes :roll: Hope it does'nt become an officer safety issue.

Both the Pac/RT and the VRS have special circuits in them that will shut down all the Pac/RT's or VRS's except the last one to arrive if there are several in the same area, to keep that from happening. They are interesting beasts. I have a Lowband Syntor X9000 with a VHF VRS I am planning on putting on the ham bands, if I ever get the time and motivation to do so.
