Just heard on the news that 31 of 45 Detroit EMS vehicles are not in use.
Which has some driving the Ford Crown Vics but can't transport patients leaving to wait for an Detroit EMS ambulance to pickup sometimes waiting up to an hour possibly. So that leaves only 14 ambulances in service.

What do you guys think about this?

I doubt EMS is using Ford Crown Vics, those are police cruisers.

They can't call a private rig, they MUST use the city EMS service? Seems kind of dumb to me.

Of course they can't......that would mean that the private ambulance would get the billing. The city is so cash strapped that they aren't going to risk that......patient safety on the other hand......,

Of course it sucks if an ambulance isn't available but emergency service support showing up in a crown vic is better than no emergency service support showing up.

Also remember that in many areas, fire apparatus respond with engines and ladders. Of course they aren't transporting either.

There is some benefit to having someone show up even if its not the ideal vehicle.

Seems like they would be able to get a loaner Ambulance from another department that they have Mutual aid with in an instance like this. That's what we did on our service when all three of our trucks broke down on the same weekend,at least that way they can transport if they are not going to allow a private service to come in.

Ok heres the trick to understanding Detroit

DONT USE COMMON SENSE

just one example, every time the HazMat truck rolls, the city gets a $10,000 fine from the state for not having just one lonely paramedic on the truck.
That truck rolls multiple times a week.

the FD is so anti EMS it is crazy
they are willing to pay, god knows how much, rather than change there ways.

The red crown vic's are supervisor cars, and now they are mixing in a few expeditions.
