An undercover Detroit police officer is good condition and is recovering from surgery at a local hospital after he was shot while trying to capture an alleged carjacker.

At 3:10 a.m. Saturday morning the officer and his partner were called to the Finest Coney Island at McNichols and Livernois where a Dodge Charger had been stolen from the parking lot.

The officers chased the vehicle to Wyoming and Thatcher where the suspects dumped the car and fled on foot, police said.

After both officers identified themselves, the 28-year-old suspect turned and fired shots at the officers, striking one officer in the face and stomach. Both officers returned the gunfire, fatally shooting the 28-year-old suspect, who has been identified as O'Neil Anthony Ellington, according to police.

The other suspect, who is 26, was captured by the other officer. The case remains under investigation.
