Detroit Public Safety

I'll be flying through Detroit next week and will have a three hour layover. I'd like to listen to the city public safety frequencies. My question is, are they still on the conventional system or have the transitioned over to the trunk system?

The new trunked system is up and operational, but as of today, they have not switched over. Just to be safe, I would have both systems available to program into your scanner. For now, I would go with the old one, but the switchover date could happen by late this month.

Just set your scanner to search between 453.0000 ~ 454.0000MHz, and you'll hear most of what's going on in Detroit.

Yes, I'll be at the airport only. I'm flying on to New Orleans, but have about three hours between flights.

You might want a closer place to DTW than Detroit 20-30 minutes is one way.
The airport is in western Wayne County.

I would program the Wayne CO TRS into your scanner. The DTW Fire Department is usually a hotbed of activity. Make sure that you have the PD in there too. If the FD is doing training the will use channel 2b. All dispatching is on 2A and the radio coms with the hospital is 2C. You will hear the Romulus FD on 154.3700 I forget what the RPD freq is. The DWNRVR TRS and WWTRS will be good to have also along with Livonia TRS this should keep you entertained for the time that you are in your layover. If you are flying NWA if at all possible go to the ends of the "A" terminal near gates A-1 thru A-10 south and A-75 thru A-78 on the north end of the terminal this should improve your range of you scanner. I used to work for the Airport FD and would use my Pro-96 in both of the stations at DTW and had no problem getting coverage. Hope this helps

You can try the new system but I doubt you will hwar that much. The state system is always very interesting.

RPD is 155.535 (Dispatch), 156.15 (Secondary), and 156.135 (Detectives/Tac)...the repeater kinda sucks though. Unless the car is in your general area, you won't hear mobiles or preps.

Hey, hey, now. We don't have a repeater in RPD. Straight simplex. 100 watt mobiles, 5 watt handhelds. Tall buldings to stick the base stations on!!!

Why am i not shocked to hear this? Rom-town is one of the largest cities in terms of land in the area and our PD is simplex. I feel safe!
