UPDATE:
DETROIT (WXYZ) - The suspect in Thursday's wild police chase through the streets of Detroit is set to be arraigned on charges relating to the pursuit.
Andre Hardy is set to be charged with fleeing and eluding. Officers say the 26-year-old was wanted on multiple warrants stemming from his failure to appear in court on a previous marijuana charge. He also has a long history of traffic violations, including at least a dozen suspensions.
Police say Hardy was behind the wheel of a large SUV officers attempted to pull over for expired tags. Officers say he took off when they tried to pull him over, leading them on a chase that lasted for several minutes over surface streets and freeways before ending when the SUV slammed into a truck at Linwood and the Lodge Service Drive. Hardy was arrested after a short foot chase.
Detroit Police say they broke off the car chase about four minutes into it, but troopers from Michigan State Police continued after the 1995 Ford Bronco. Hardy was eventually taken into custody by a Detroit Police officer.
Hardy has told officers he is a member of the Moorish Nation, and because of that he did not have to stop for them. Members of the Moorish Nation believe they descend from an indigenous group that predates the founding of the United States of America and, because of that, claim they are not bound by the country's laws.
Three people were inside the truck that was hit by the SUV. They have been identified as a man, his wife and their daughter. The couple had just picked up the girl from school. All three suffered minor injuries in the crash. They were treated at Henry Ford Hospital and released.
