Does anyone know the difference between the Diamond J-130 wideband discone and the ICOM AH-7000? They look pretty much the same to me. Thanks in advance.

I had read they were exactly the same, except that the Icom AH-7000 was supplied with type "N" connectors, and the Diamond J-130 was supplied with a PL259. The "N" being the better of the two, especially for 800MHz and above.

Actually you can save some money and signal and get the D-130N (with N connector). AES (Amateur Electronic Supply) is the only stateside dealer that I have found it at. It is listed as the D130NJ. Same price as the regular model. I also read that Diamond makes the AH-7000 for Icom anyway. I am not sure why the manufacturers don't make all discones with N connectors, given the wide frequency range they are made for. Sure the connector is more expensive, but not that much so. :roll: The higher in frequency you go the leakier the SO-239/PL-259 gets.

Edited for: Actually the discone that Scanner Master is selling looks like it could be the D130N as well. If not, at least it has an N connector!

Electrically a discone is a discone, only those made for scanners have that loaded whip and extended "radials" making a groundplane for VHF Lo Band. Actually it's a modified discone, a cross between the two. The brand name doesn't matter, rugged mechanical construction does when it comes to long term reliability.
Right, the N connector being a low loss constant impedance device is MUCH better on those high frequencies but if you use ordinary RG-8U coax you lose the advantage and then some. You need Belden 9913 (only Belden makes it, accept no "type" substitutions) or that "gold plated" stuff if your wallet can stand the expense.
BTW, those who use RG-58U and complain the antenna doesn't work don't understand that type of coax is good for HF work only, loss on VHF is horrible and gets MUCH worse as the frequency goes up.
