I took some of my Xmas bonus along to the Ham Radio Outlet today and after looking at every portable antenna they had, settled on the Diamond SRH789. This thing is amazing for the $35 I paid for it. I have been weary of telescoping antennas since my experiences with 3 antennas from RS literally falling apart but this thing is in a league of its own. I am able to pick up aircraft really clearly from INSIDE the car and house. Anyone else come across one of these and having the same incredible results?

Doesn't that antenna extend out to 31 inches tall? How can a SMA connection handle that?

I extended it to its full length to try and hear CBs (success). It actually doesn't weigh much at all so it didn't feel like it was putting any strain on the connector. I did keep it bolt upright so it didnt lean but I prefer to keep it short for the 800mhz stuff most of the time anyway.

Very expensive, but worth it if you like telescopics. It does extend to 31 inches, but the longest I use it is with vhf airband at around 21 inches total. The slim light weight doesn't seem to overstress the sma (or bnc if you have that version) much.
