JEFFERSON COUNTY – Sheriff's deputies were called to break up a couple's argument over which word appears first in the dictionary. He said, "A." She said, "Aardvark."

In what could be a first-of-a-kind police call, an officer responded to the 11400 block of West Burgundy Avenue on the night of April 26 to check out a report of a domestic disturbance.

There, according to the deputy's report, he learned that "Crystal" and her boyfriend "Joseph" had sparred over which word appears first in the dictionary. She was convinced the first word was "aardvark," a large-eared, termite-devouring, burrowing mammal native to Southern Africa. He was fairly convinced the indefinite article "a" came first.

It seems Crystal tried to win a bet with her boyfriend by consulting a dictionary, but their linguistic lockup lingered.

For the record, "a" comes before "aardvark."

No citations were issued as the couple's war of words had been just that, free of physical violence.

(For those interested, the last word in several online dictionaries is "zyzzyva", a tropical American weevil found on palms. A zyzzyva would likely be eaten by an aardvark should the animal bookends of the dictionary world were ever to meet.)

This is apparently what happens when a geek hooks up with a nerd.

Of course the real catalyst is that one of them was Female; I wonder if she was the geek or the nerd? :)

Another thing pointing to the guy being the nerd is he probably figured only the letter "A" does not give you much to look up.

I guess the only way out of this quandary is to grab a beer and go out to the garage and change the oil in the SUV--
