I noticed the LASD units has the new white plasticky antenna now to replace their old antennas? Does that indicate anything? Digital?

I noticed that they have two on the roof and the standard UHF whip on the trunk.

You are right. The communications systems haven't changed but, I think their techs decided that the low profile antenna did a better job of receiving signals for their MDCs. I say that because a lot of the new radio cars still have the whips. LASD tends to test new equipment to death. By the time they decide it's okay to use, there is something better out there.

None of this explains why there are two beer can antennas on the roof and one UHF whip on the trunk. That would indicate that there are three transmitters in the car. What gives? I know some SEB units have two radios and computer, but I am refering to the standard patrol units having three antennas on them. I have noticed the LACOPD cars have been using the beer can antennas for several years and I thought that ISD radio techs handled them also.

The whip is for the voice radio. the two beer can antennas are for the MDC. Why it takes two as opposed for 1 on the MDT, I don't know...LACOPD has used MDC's for about 6 years now......Yes LASD is very slow with technology
