• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

The 2500 can do encryption beyond ADP. The module is part of the keypad assembly.

Also the XTS2500 does not have Hi power/low power selectable on a per channel basis like the XTS5000 does.

With the XTS2500 you need to make up a 2nd channel using a new personality if you want to switch to low power.

The power level is by the personality on both radio not the channel. The only difference is with 5K you can select the power level view the user menu.

Here is a decent overview of several of the Astro25 model portables compared with the APX.

The 5000 and 2500 are essentially the same thing.

The 2500 can not have user-selectable high/low power - these must be hardcoded in the personality.

The 2500 isn't capable of Type I encryption algorithms.

Also, the 2500 doesn't do the Fireground Accountability system. Note: this *can* be put into a 2500, but Motorola won't officially support this, any 2500 with this feature did *not* come from Motorola.

Also, the 2500 does 512 modes, the 5000 does 1000. However these are soft limitations. Both are theoratically capable of 2048 channels although again, this isn't a Motorola supported feature so you aren't likely to find one that does.

That's pretty much the differences, besides physical ones and battery types.

Which is fine because they weigh a ton and shouldnt be on the fireground anyway.

The 2500 is capable of 870 modes now BTW as long as you have recent firmware and CPS.

The 2500 weighs less than a 5000. You're suggesting a 2500 doesn't belong on the fireground because its too heavy? Yeah...

Interesting re 870 modes... But with new CPS you loose FPP! Haha

No you don't. I have a Model III VHF with the latestest release for a 4 Meg radio and ver 13 CPS and the FPP works just fine. I don't know where you keep coming up with this stuff.

Um, yes it does. My area was the "test bed" for this feature on the XTS2500. Only recently (last year or two) was this feature officially supported on the XTS2500.

Where are you comming up with this information? It's WAY out of date - by about 4 years.
