Today i saw this antenna on a unmarked black opp car. About a month ago the same car didnt have this antenna or the little gps on beside it. Use to just have the pancake in the middle and now has a whip and little white treble gps antenna to the left.

Today i saw the same thing on a brand new car that has the new license plate scanning camera on it
Why did they change and add the little gps antenna?

If I was you, I'd repost my query on the Eastern Canada forum. The guy with the picture of Don Cherry probably knows.

if you are asking about the antenna that has the two coils, it is for 800Mhz.

i see them alot on oilpatch vehicles, the company i work for uses that style as well. ours are maxrad flavored, i dont know what model we use, they are tuned for cell phones.

They use to have one of these antennas in the middle for their MDT. Now iv seen 2 units with the different antenna and a tiny little tremble gps antenna on the left.

Any idea why they would switch out?

Nice pics Muxlow ! Don't know about the antennas, they say they can read about two plates per second, but IIRC the media said as many as 6 or 7 per sec if need be. Maybe they help transmit faster ??? The plate reader looks more like ET staring at you. The OPP might pull ya over and tell you to "Phone home !" hahahaha OPP's Licence Plate Cameras Hit The Roads This Weekend - CityNews

Do you know how many cruisers are equipped with those ?

There are 4 SO FAR in the GTA that have them. Wonder how well they will work going 100km or more on the highway and how they hold up in the snow.

Also it's not just these 4 cars that have this new antenna and gps on the trunk. A stealth black vic also had the little gps and whip on the top. And just a month ago this exact car didnt. Nothing changed inside either. Wonder if all the cars are going to switch to these 2 different antennas?

Antenna with 2 coils I'm guessing is a triband antenna. 142, 410 & 800 (or other cell data frequency ) mhz??? Guess they must use Bell for the cell data.

They may have gone to a different medium for their data, i.e. - celluar to LMR such as DataRadio
