I was curious as to how many people like the new digital modulation... I'll start. I personally would like my sheriff's department to stay analog, but they'll be moving to a digital system with in the next few years. It is very clear, yes, but it bonks (digital) and breaks up just like analog. Maybe it'll get better...

Digital, is great.. unless its Provoice from the monitoring standpoint... The audio is crisper, less interference, and its got a lot better security than analog. Not to mention encryption on digital versus analog. There used to be a sample years ago on here back when we were still trunkedradio.net... It was of an XTS3000 on the RCMP system using analog, then DES on analog, then digital, then DES on digital... That sampling alone was eneough to convince me on the better aspects of digital. On a properly designed digital system, there is far less instance of "bonking", and distortion. Its all issues of coverage. From the aspect of someone that will be using digital, and has heard first hand comms on digital from four radios, two ASTRO Spectra Clean Cab railroad radios talking to each other, then to an ASTRO Spectra W-7 in a truck, then to an XTS3000.... It was simply outstanding. When conversion occurs on our consoles and we get to test the towers for the digital over distances,.. I will let you know my opinion of that.

Digital Vs analog

I live on the east bank of Jefferson Parish. A lot of you are already aware that we have an analog system for fire,ems, and public works. We also have a digital system for law enforcement, plus a few FD's still use conventional for disp. and FG. Our Com. officer will not go to trunking for disp. and FG due to the fact that trunking was not designed for public safety, it was designed for business use only. He is not convinced on trunking and i also agree with him. there have been many instances where trunking failed with very bad timing all over the coutry.

Sounds like your "Com. officer" needs a little educating. Trunking is and has been used successfully for years by public safety without the failure that you speak of. And, when it does fail (which is almost never), it resorts to conventional mode anyway. According to the RR database,
your parish IS trunked.
