A few days ago, Cleveland PD's frequency 154.055 was taken off the air for an hour or so. During that time some very loud noise was heard in short bursts.

After they came back on the air an occasional noise like we used to hear on the old 2 tone pagers are heard.

Still hearing the loud brief noises once in awhile.

They don't really sound like data bursts.

Any ideas what they've done? Still hear the regular analog transmission.

The Police and Fire along with Peninsula Fire will be going to VHF Mototrbo. Their normal activity will be digital but will be able to go analog to talk to other agencies.

It just opens up the possibility for you to get the DSD soundcard hook-up to play with so you can casually drop some of their "secret squirrel" stuff into a conversation with TPTB and enjoy the aftermath. Take it as a positive for your future entertainment.

I wouldn't worry about it Dave. It's only a matter of time before they come out with a scanner that will scan Mototrbo. It's not proprietary like Open Sky or ProVoice. So as long as there no encryption involved you can decode on your pc like was mentioned above or wait for a DMR scanner to come out. Sorry to hear they drank the Mototrbo kool aid that's disappointing.
